Also known as "Blue-headed Parrot Finch".

DISTRIBUTION

New Guinea, parts of Indonesia, western Pacific islands, north-east Australia (probably introduced).



DESCRIPTION

11-12.5 cm in lenth. An essentially green finch with deep blue forehead and face. The tail is red to reddish brown. The bill is stout and black in colour. The legs and feet are pinkish brown. In the hen the blue on the face is less extensive. The colouring is generally duller than the adult male. Otherwise very similar.

HABITAT

Inhabits rainforest, mangrove or eucalyptus forest clearins and edges. Also grasslands and edges of cultivation.


BEHAVIOUR

Elusive and difficult to see finch, mostly because of the camouflaging colouring. More often heard than seen. Locally variable in abundance.


DIET

Ground feeding mainly on grass seeds. Also eats bamboo seeds and occasionally insects.
