The Misconceptions associated with Roleplaying:

During a conversation with a friend, he admitted that he would probably enjoy roleplaying but for the stigma attatched to it. Few hobbies have been so maligned as "roleplaying", and the misconception that players are at best geeks and nerds, and at worst devil-worshipping deviants, does little to encourage people to join in. Many people have no idea what roleplaying is except for what they have seen or read in the media - usually exaggerated tabloid stories about deranged children worshipping the devil or committing suicide because of "roleplaying games", right next to the article about Elvis masquerading as a local milkman in Brighton.

As mentioned before, there are some people who should not be roleplaying because they take the concept of "escapsim" too far - these are the immature players who take it far too seriously, and certain RARE individuals who have severe mental and emotional problems. However, most people maintain a healthy perspective that roleplaying is just a "game of pretend", something which can be great fun to take part in with a good friends. The goldern rule is to have as much fun as you can during the game, and afterwards forget about it all and pop off down the pub!
