Miles Driven on June 24: 200
This morning I got up early and decided I'd better go for a kayak paddle after all; I needed to work off my frustrations with the hostel and I didn't know when I'd be able to go kayaking again. Plus I found an ad on tahoesbest.com for $2 of a rental at Timber Cove, so it was only $12 an hour. The guy who worked there was right, an hour wasn't long enough, but I had to press on.
After the paddle (and after changing into dry clothes in the Timber Cove bathroom) I drove along highway 50 (very pretty) through Placerville and into Sacramento. I wanted to go to Old Town Sacramento because I remember liking that area the last time I was there (1991). I parked and discovered a new, partially open-air mall called the Plaza. I followed the signs out of the mall to Il Fornaio Bakery (a great bakery and cafe I remembered going to in Seattle with my cousin); in the process of seeking the bakery I stumbled upon the end of the History Channel Great Race, an antique car race from Boston to Sacramento. I went back through the plaza, bought ANOTHER throwaway camera, and took pictures of the great cars as they came through the finish line.
After the race ended I drove to Berkeley, stopped at Andronico's for Acme sourdough bread, and then drove over the Bay Bridge to the apartment of my college friend Greg. For some reason this time as crossed the Bay Bridge I found myself thinking about the '89 Earthquake. Greg lives on a hilly street. Oy, what a hill. We hung out at his place as I told him the story of my trip so far, then went to a neighborhood place for pizza. Half the pizza was clam and garlic (yum!), the other half artichoke and mushroom (not bad).
We came back and should have gone to sleep but instead stayed up watching the disturbing "Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean". Greg had been in a version of the play and knew the parts very well.
