Thrissivaperur, better known as Thrissur (until recent times also known as Trichur) is a town in the Central part of Kerala, India. It is the cultural capital of the state. It is in this town that I spent nearly 20 years of my life; I was born in Thrissur.

Thrissur is already present in the Tourist map of Kerala, thanks to the festival Thrissur pooram .

This festival is usually conducted during the months of April-May. The festival lasts for two days, and lakhs of people come to attend this. The attractive events of the festival, are the large number of tamed elephants which take part in the rituals. The elephants come out in their full ceremonial attire. The fire works display of this festival is famous all over Kerala (and in the world too). The tourism department have tried to create replicas of this festival, but for real tourists I feel that they should view this festival.

The Lord Krishna Temple at Guruvayur is a pilgrim centre famous all over India. Thousands of devotees come to this place every day. The number has increased with the opening of a new Railway line from Thrissur to Guruvayur.Guruvayur is famous for Elephants.

Guruvayur temple owns More than 45 Elephants!!PunnathurKotta is the home for all those elephants.it's only 5km from Guruvayur.

Thrissur is a place of communal harmony. No communal riots have ever taken place in my town. Churches and temples go hand in hand. Thrissur also has some good churches. The Puthan Palli, is said to be an exact replica of the papal palace in Rome. Another famous church is the Palayur Church in Chavakkad (21 kms from Thrissur). It is believed that St.Thomas, landed here and converted three families into christianity. They were the first converted christians in the whole of India!

The Kerala Kalamandalam is located at Vallathol Nagar nearly 23 kms away from Thrissur. It is in this place that all the traditional arts of Kerala i.e. Kathakali, Mohiniyattam etc. are taught in the traditional way. Many foriegners visit this place to learn more about these art forms.

Thrissur is easily accessible by rail, road and air. The nearest Air port is at Cochin, which is 65kms away from Thrissur. Thrissur has a good Railway Station, and all the express trains (except Rajadhani Exp.) stop here. The people are most helpful, and illtreating of tourists is never heard off.
