Sree Kerala Varma College (or SKVC for
short) is in my home town, and I joined this college to take my Graduate
degree in B.Sc Mathematics . The college is affiliated to the University of Calicut and has a strength of nearly 5000
students. SKVC is just 4 days older than Independent India, and celebrated
its 50th Birth day along with the Nation. Kerala Varma
College was once a palace of the His Higness Rama Varma, the Maharajah of
Cochin, and so the class rooms of this college still has a Royal Touch
. The picture on the left shows one of the old buildings of the
college. Until 1990, this building was used as the Administrative block.
At present this building houses the various language departments, and the
Head Quarters and stores of the NCC company. The right side (the arch and
the rooms above it) of this building was pulled down long ago. The beauty
of the campus was best described by the unknown editor of the college
magazine published in the year 1948.

        "The spacious buildings, shady
parks and smiling fields nearby, away from the nuisance of town, yet
near enough for its advantages, have made the college and ideal
Temple of Learning. Here the students never feel the cramped life
of congested towns or the dreary monotony of distant
settlements." Life in SKVC was just the opposite of my school days.
Every one was a free bird. Students came and went as they pleased. Bunking
of classes was not a serious crime, and teachers did not bother to make
sure that all students were present in the class. SKVC had a good set of
studious guys, good athletes and foot ballers. Many students in SKVC have
become University Toppers, and many sports people of the college
represented the University. Many students who studied here joined the
political student organizations and later became ministers and famous
      politicians. Other
than these serious matters, SKVC had also its own set of romances and fun.
Many students first taste love when they join the college. SKVC had its
own set of Romeos and Juliets. These people roamed around the college
campus, regularly visited the college canteen and would be in a world of
their own. I underline the word their , since I
personally haven't got a chance to fall in love. The maximum number of lovers are usually
found in the Pre-Degree class rooms and The Aallthara we called it as
lovers corner (the photo on the top of the page). I am sure that the old
students of the college, will be able to recognize this old building and
think about their "good old days", spent in the college.
Student organisations are another species to be
mentioned. SKVC never lacked strong student unions and leaders. These
unions were only interested in taking out processions and organising
strikes. Strikes meant that it was a holiday and the students happily go
home. The strikes would be in protest against global treaties like the
GATT or against a price-hike in the college canteen. The unions also some
times have idealogical differences which leads to a good fight. The
weapons range from bare hands to swords(Vadival) and knives. The fights
come to an end when the police arrive, and whisks away who-ever they
suspect to be a member in the fighting parties. All the idealogical
differences are solved as soon as the Police jeep enters the campus,
and both the parties run for their lives. My college life in
SKVC came to an end in April 1996. Most of my firend supports ABVP union But
The truth is that I never took part in any major activities of the
college. But I did take a close look at all these events/activities. And
they will remain in my memories for ever.
Before you go up, here is the list of people who
helped me enjoy life in Sree Kerala Varma College. If you were an
ex-student of the college, you would be able to recognize the teachers.
