Discovering Ourselves in Literature and Life:

Management Plan And Adjustments for Special Needs

This is a massive unit which incorporates the entire semester.  Careful management must be taken to ensure that all components are completed and students do not waste time in class.  The center of the management must rely on strict classroom rules and fair punishment.

Martinez's Classroom Rules

  1. Be in sit with all supplies on desk when tardy bell rings.

  2. Raise your hand to speak during classroom instruction

  3. Keep voices to a mouse whisper when in small groups

  4. Respect yourself, others, and the teacher

  5. No behavior or language will be permitted that keeps the teacher from teaching and the students from learning.

Martinez's Consequences For Breaking Rules:

  1. Warning

  2. Removal from classroom--stand facing the corner by the door--3 minutes

  3. Referral to Chill Out

  4. Conference with parent

  5. Severe Clause--Referral to appropriate administrator

Management of Assignments:

  1. Teacher should keep an accurate lesson plan book that clearly explains due dates and assignments.  This will help the teacher remain organized.
  2. Teacher should grade and return assignments within a reasonable amount of time.  This helps students feel less stress about grades when they know what they can keep accurate track of them
  3. Teacher should keep all graded assignments in the classroom.  This will help with missing grades and parent / teacher conferences.

Adjustments for Special Needs:

  1. Assignments and instructions will be modified based on a student's IEP

  2. Assignments and instructions will be modified based on a student's 504

Teachers need to be careful and follow all 504 and IEPs for each student.  Failure to do so can cause a lot of headache and heartache.
