Background:  It is important for students to understand and reflect on who they are.  This activity will allow them the opportunity to discover themselves and to think about their place in this world.  This activity will be an ongoing exploration throughout the semester.  It will be important that students discover that writers write to help explain the universal human experiences that people regardless of sex, age, race, or period of time go through.

 

Materials:  The following materials will be needed to complete this unit:

 
1.  roll of news paper from local newspaper company (newspapers will usually let you buy the end of the rolls for a small fee at the end of each day or printing cycle.)
2.  tape measure or yard stick and scissors
3.  digital camera--teacher's use only
4.  pictures of students--have students bring in the most recent picture of themselves
5.  literature--appropriate for grade level and reading level of students
6.  video camera
7.  TV and VCR
8.  computer with word processing and internet capabilities
9.  other materials include markers, crayons, pencils, paper, notebooks, 
10.  Overhead, overhead transparencies, and markers.

Advanced Technology Competencies for Teachers:

10.2 Use school television resources that support the curriculum--This goal is met because in this unit I would use a television to compare and contrast different directors interpretation of a novel

10.6 Locate, evaluate, and select appropriate teaching/learning resources and curriculum materials for the content area and target audience, including computer-based products, videotapes and discs, local experts, primary documents and artifacts, texts, reference books, literature, and other print sources--This goal is met because in this unit I use a variety of materials that support my curriculum as well as my audience

11.4 Use technology to facilitate teaching strategies specific to the discipline--This goal is met because I the strategies I use are for the studying of literature

12.1 Develop performance tasks that require students to (a) locate and analyze information as well as draw conclusions and (b) use a variety of media to communicate results clearly--This goal is met because my assignments require students to analyze and draw conclusions

12.7 Select and create learning experiences that are appropriate for curriculum goals, relevant to learners, based upon principles of effective teaching and learning, incorporate the use of media and technology for teaching where appropriate, and support learner expression in a variety of media using a variety of media communication tools--This goal is met because my students will experience a variety of medias during this unit

13.1 Use media and technology to address differences in children's learning and performance--This goal is met because assignment will differ based on 504 plans and IEPs.

13.2 Use media and technology to support learning for children with special needs--This goals is met because assignments will differ based on 504 plans and IEPs.

13.4 Use appropriate local, state, and national services or resources to meet diverse learning needs through technology--This goal is met because I use all available resources to meet the needs of all my students.

North Carolina Computer Skills Curriculum:

3.1  Use word processing and/or desktop publishing for a variety of writing assignments/projects--This goal is met because students must type reports

3.2  Use electronic resources for research--This goal is met because students will use the internet for this project

3.3  Select and use technological tools for class assignments, projects, and presentations--This goal is met because students must use technology to complete this project

3.4  Adhere to Fair Use and Multimedia Copyright Guidelines, citing sources or copyrighted materials in papers, projects, and multimedia presentations--This goal is met because students must use copyright guidelines when writing 

North Carolina Standard Course of Study:

1.01 Create memoirs that give an audience a sense of how the past can be significant for the present by:

  • elaborating upon a significant past episode from the student’s current perspective.
  • projecting the student’s voice in the work through reflective interpretation of relationships to people and events.
  • writing for a specific audience and purpose.

1.02 Reflect and respond expressively to texts so that the audience will:

  • discover multiple perspectives.
  • investigate connections between life and literature.
  • explore how the student’s life experiences influence his or her response to the selection.
  • recognize how the responses of others may be different.
  • articulate insightful connections between life and literature.
  • consider cultural or historical significance.

Both of these goals are met because students will reflect on their lives as well as make connections between literature and life.
