ACB/AUSTRALIAN INDIGENOUS DEFEAT JAPAN IN FINAL OF FIRST
ICC EAST ASIA CRICKET TOURNAMENT
With two wickets down and two overs to spare, the ACB/Australia
Indigenous development team successfully chased Japan's total of 3/143
in the final of the inaugural ICC East Asia Cricket 8's Festival at Lilac
Hill Park. ACB/Australian Indigenous went through the tournament
undefeated. In finishing second, Japan are officially the ICC East
Asia Affiliate member champions. The tournament, hosted by the WACA,
is part of the ICC Development Program to globalise the sport of cricket
and has seen South Korea and Indonesia competing in international competition
for the first-ever time.
In the consolation final for 3rd and 4th, Indonesia set
South Korea a big total of 5/168. The Koreans responded by posting
their highest score of the event of 98.
Player of the day award was presented to Jung Suk Lee
of South Korea, making 37no and taking 1/10.

on the award to Balinese player Soni Hawoe, in recognition of his performances
for the team.
Media Summary:
As just reward for the recent significant progression
of cricket development in that country, Japan will take on the ACB Australian
Indigenous team in the final of the inaugural ICC East Asia Cricket 8's
Festival at Lilac Hill Park tomorrow. The team sealed their spot with a
thrilling last over victory over Indonesia in the last preliminary round.
A fantastic effort by Indonesia, who have been an ICC
Affiliate member for just 8 months (Japan was admitted in 1989). South
Korea ended up the only team to have bowled out the ACB Indigenous team
within their allotted 20 overs, and have done it twice.

Summary: Day Two of the inaugural ICC East Asia Cricket
8's Festival at Richardson Park, South Perth today saw the ACB Aboriginal
development team consolidate their spot at the top of the table, ahead
of Japan. The tournament, hosted by the WACA, is part of the International
Cricket Council Development Program to globalise cricket. Four matches
per day are played in an eight-a-side twenty overs per team format.

JCA'S answer to KCL proposal
Below is the integral text of the
letter sent by the JCA to the KCL Committee Members:
Dear KCL Committee Members,
JCA's decisions in regards to the KCL's proposal.
KCL Proposal 1
Starting from the 2004 season, all players in the K.C.L.
and any other
competition recognised by the J.C.A. must have legal
visa status in Japan.
JCA Decision to Proposal 1
All Players participating in all matches organized by
JCA must at least have VISA status from the year 2002. Since JCA has established
as an organization based on law, participants who may have problems legally
cannot be accepted.
In order for JCA to accept KCL as an official competition,
the followings are required;
i)All persons concerned, such as player,
umpire, and scorer, are
legally satisfactory.
ii)all players have joined the appointed
damage insurance.
iii)the competition is independently manageable.

KCL Proposal 2
Starting from the 1st January 2004, a maximum of 2 non-Japanese
Nationals (subject to visa status, and residence requirements to be determined)
shall be eligible for the Japanese National Team.
JCA Decision to Proposal 2
We welcome non-Japnanese Nationals to the Japanese National
Team from 2002 with conditions below (it's exactly the same conditions
to Japanese Nationals):
i) Participation in the stipulated practices and matches
of the national team.
We feel it is very important to participate in most practices
and matches to fulfill the selection requirements of the National team.
ii) ICC conditions
The ICC requires any player selected in a national team
who does
not qualify by birth of given country to have residence
status with the condition of spending at least 240 days per year in their
adopted country for the preceding 5 years.
Number of non-Japanese nationals has been not decided
yet.

INAUGURAL ALL-JAPAN TOURNAMENT HELD
The first-ever Japanese Cricket Association event (Sixes
format), involving foreign and native cricket loving teams from all over
the country has been staged at the Nihon Aerobic Centre in Chiba. Tokai
won the Cup Final in what has been described as a very exciting event for
the future of cricket in Japan which was very well organised by the JCA.
Congratulations to all involved!
In others news, underdogs Tokyo Giants have won the prestigious
Kanto Cricket League Cup. This is the Giants’ first major victory in the
two years of their existence. The prize-giving ceremony was held on 29
December.
CONFERENCES, CONFERENCES…
Following the ICC Global Development Conference in NZ
from 17-21 January, the 2002 ICC EAP Development Conference, involving
Delegates from all of ICC, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Papua New Guinea,
Cook Islands, Indonesia, Japan, New Caledonia, Philippines, Samoa, South
Korea, Tonga & Vanuatu, was successfully staged in Melbourne from 26-29
January. The broad objectives of the extensive four day Agenda were:
1. Chance to share information/ideas
2. Update everyone on global & regional initiatives
3. Get member feedback on new ideas/policy
4. Provide sense of team working together
5. Create consistent planning, reporting & system
guidelines
6. Clarify fluctuating ICC positions
7. Progress the East Asia – Pacific cricket development
“family”.
The major outcomes of the Conference included:
- The establishment of an ICC EAP Regional Cricket Advisory
Committee comprising Full, Associate & Affiliate member representation
- The establishment of a draft Regional Strategic Plan
to 2005
- The establishment of a document template and initial
preparation of individual country Strategic Plans to 2005 (to be completed
by 30 April 2002)
- The preparation of a proposed schedule of Regional
ICC/international tournaments, including first-ever junior events, through
to 2007
- The establishment of clear coach / cricket education
plans and processes
- The desire for a continuation and expansion of the
ICC “trial” State/Province partnerships program.
The above substantial matters, and implications for cricket
development in the Region, will be expanded upon in future News Flashes
/ Media Releases as further global and regional factors are finalised.
The Delegates were delighted to end the Conference as guests of the Australian
Cricket Board at a classic Day/Night match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground
in which Australia stole victory from New Zealand in the last over thanks
to a magnificent century from Michael Bevan
The developing cricket countries even got a well-deserved
welcome on the MCG scoreboard and public address! Thanks heaps to all participants
for their outstanding contributions.

The Western Australian CA has been confirmed as host
of the inaugural ICC East Asia Cricket Eights Festival from 25 February
– 1 March next year. Competing at the event, which compliments the global
ICC objective of “widening the market” by promoting and expanding the game
in a variety of forms, will be: Indonesia (new ICC Affiliate member in
2001); Japan (ICC Affiliate member since 1989); Philippines (ICC Affiliate
member since 2000); South Korea (new ICC Affiliate member in 2001), and
an; ACB/Australian Indigenous development team. Matches will be played
