Mathematics is counting and measuring the world
around us and working things out from those measurements. Mathematics
helps us make things and do things. For instance if we are going
to make a tee-pee, we need to find a specific number of poles of
a certain length. Then when we go to find the poles, we need to
have an idea of how far we will have to go and how long it will
take. This all involves simple mathematics. The bigger and more
complicated the things we do, the more involved is the mathematics.
For example to go to the moon requires some very serious calculations.
An easy way to start understanding the world of mathematics
is to play with 10 (ten), if only for
the reason we have 10 fingers and 10 toes upon which to count. (However
the Hindu – Arabic numeration system which we use is "user
base 10" in technical terms.)
Before you learn maths you need to
learn the language of mathematics. This involves the numbers0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9and some mathematical
symbols.
