Weekend

Yet another entry. If I didn't know any better I'd think this is some frequent thing I do. Right now I'm sitting at Wayne's writing this so it's a completely enjoyable experience, tarnished only by the fact that I have to go home and get some work done later on.

But enough complaining - instead I feel I should write a little about my weekend - the most misspent weekend of the year. You see, I was planning to get a lot of work done - most of it, actually. Needless to say that was wishful thinking. Instead I went out with Megan on Friday. Seeing her wasn't to be postponed since I hadn't seen her for weeks. I live on the other side of town, she goes to school every night - you do the math. So, in order to catch up, we went to Columbus and had a few drinks. During those few drinks we came up with a business plan which I won't specify right now, suffice to say that it held up to scrutiny even the next morning. I will let you know if and when we've put the gears in motion.

After those very enlightening beers we walked around the Old Town for awhile and bitched about the cold and the lack of entertainment. And since I was still counting on Saturday morning and getting some work done, we cut the evening short and went to our respective homes.

As the brightest readers may have already gathered I got no work done on Saturday morning. Specifically because there was no morning for me - I woke up at noon. And I never sleep that late! I guess it was just the month of no sleep that finally caught up with me. I did the usual Saturday morning stuff - which usually consists of dragging my ass to the sofa, to the shower, back to the sofa and finally to my watch where I find that over an hour has passed with nothing to show for it. To save some time I figured I'd go out and get some lunch - killing two birds (a.k.a. breakfast and lunch) with the same stone, so to speak. I will visit that issue later.

I also did some shopping, got back home and found I only had an hour before I had to leave again, this time for Kelly's housewarming party. I don't think I've mentioned the fact that after mere two weeks of being roommates Kelly got her own flat and moved out. She works for the Ministry of Defense and they apparently give out flats for minimal rent when you ask them. Did I make a mistake by going into the private sector!

So, back to the housewarming - there were many good friends and a lot of wine. Nothing extraordinary happened but it was a lot of fun nonetheless. If anyone of you has checked the previous entry you must have noticed the incoherent letter there. I've not bothered to translate it since it doesn't even have a point in Estonian and would make even less sense in English. It was the cumulative effort of everyone present, for some reason we felt a letter combining random phrases from the evening should be written. As mentioned before, it makes no sense whatsoever but it still makes me laugh and therefore deserves a place in a separate entry.

On Sunday I woke up with a knowledge that it was the dawn of another day where I'd get no work done. Now, you might wonder how I knew that, given the fact that I'm usually the kind of person who lies to herself: "I'll just take a shower and then start working." "I'll just watch this episode of Will and Grace and then start working." "I'll just have lunch and then start working." "I'll just..." Well, you get my drift! But I'd already made plans for this particular Sunday - we had planned the Simpsons marathon with Megan, Alex and his friend.

Alex is a huge the Simpsons fan but previously he had no other source of the cartoon except for the TV. Not the best situation for a hardcore fan. One day he found out that Eve and her husband have the first 3 seasons on DVD. After that he's been hinting that he'd like to see them. Since Eve has already watched them all she probably wouldn't be very excited if we attacked her house in the hope of seeing them. I don't have a DVD-player since I'm still waiting for November's salary to buy myself a stove. But Alex does and we planned to borrow Eve's Simpsons DVD and watch it at Alex's.

That was the plan and it sounded pretty simple. Needless to say the execution of cet plan was not so simple. I called Alex at noon and said I'd be there with the DVDs at about 3 o'clock. After that I did something for two whole hours (where does the time go on weekends? Seriously!) and finally reached the centre at 2:30. I met with Megan, we had coffee and then went to Eve's. Half the trouble seemed to be over when we got the DVDs. We got a pizza and set out to Lasnamäe where Alex lives. We even managed to find his building and get in with no great difficulties. With an anticipating look Alex grabbed the DVD, popped it in and ... got a message saying "This DVD is not for viewing in your region!" Apparently Eve's husband had got them from the US. Since they have a multi-regional player it posed no problem, but for poor Alex...

After some moping around Megan remembered her brother had a DVD-player on his computer. Fortunately he was living nearby, was at home and had no problem lending us the player. We put all the layers of clothes on again and went to get the thing.

When we finally got back at Alex's it was already past 5. At least the player worked and we got to watch some 6 episodes from the third season. After those it was already pretty late and Megan and I started retracing our steps to return the borrowed stuff and finally get home. I reached the Hellhole at 10 and wanted nothing more than to get to bed. I'm getting old!

*****

As promised before I am revisiting the Saturday lunch theme where I went to Hesburger. Actually it's more of an introduction to a cool new theory Kelly and I came up with but... yes, getting on with the story.

So, on Saturday I went to get lunch at Hesburger. They have good tortillas and I tend to go out and get myself one when I'm lazy enough not to cook (which is pretty often considering I only have an ancient hotplate to cook with). That was the situation on Saturday and I set off to find myself a tortilla. But what I also found was that they had two guys behind the counter. And one of them was awfully cute.

Naturally, I did absolutely nothing about that but it got me thinking. Recently I've noticed that I consider more guys cute. Since I don't think there's been a development where half the men in Estonia have suddenly started grooming themselves to my liking, there can be only one explanation: I've lowered my standards.

And I'm not saying it's a bad thing because my standards are high, both the physical appearance and general intelligence have to be on the acceptable level. That means I need some Hollywood wannabe with an IQ higher than mine, which - in spite of my inane writing - is not a small demand.

So, to recap, cute Hesburger guy + other cute guys = lower standards on mankind in general. What I still didn't know was why this was happening. But when I told all this to Kelly she immediately had the answer. And this was the birth of the KAAMOS THEORY!

[I'm sure there's a word in English for 'kaamos' even though I was unable to find it. So if you know it then, please, share. For now I'll just settle for explanation. Kaamos - in my mind - is the time where sun is gone and it feels like you'll never see it again. It lasts about 6 months in Estonia. a.k.a. Eternal night]

They say spring is the time of falling in love. And it is - for men! In spring the weather gets warmer, the skirts get shorter… Voila! Instant love! For girls it doesn't actually work like this because, let's be honest, who among us finds their white hairy legs and beer guts attractive?
Autumn is a whole other deal. First of all they've, hopefully, got some sun and lost some weight. Second, and more important, reason however is the substance of the KAAMOS THEORY - there's six months of cold and dark ahead. Who would want to be alone during that time? No girl I know. So nature, in its infinite wisdom, lowers our expectations every autumn so we'd find a mate to spend the winter (and more importantly New Year's Eve and Valentine's Day) with.

Do you think I could base my master's thesis on this?
