A Window Manager is a special class of X client, analagous to the login shell of older UNIX environments. Just as UNIX users may choose the Korn Shell, the Bourne Shell or the 'C' Shell, there are several different window managers that may be chosen to suit the individual user. The oldest and simplest of the window managers for UNIX is the Tab Window Manager, or twm. The tab window manager was developed at MIT, and was part of the original release of X11.
The Motif Window Manager was a part of the original release of the Open Software Foundation's implementation of the Motif widget set.
The Desk Top Window Manager is the window manager component of the Common Desktop Environment and is constructed using the Motif widget set.
