The children will be divided into pairs and assigned a horse for the duration of the camp. They will be responsible for feeding, watering and basic care of the horse. They will be taught how to prepare their horse for their horseback riding activities. There is no need to worry if your child has no horseback riding experience. Our experienced riders will evaluate your child and their horse riding ability and base the riding activities of each child on this evaluation. Basic lessons and riding rules will be taught to each child to insure a safe and pleasurable experience for everyone involved.
There will be many other activities offered in addition to horseback riding. There are 5 earthen ponds at the Sykes Ranch, which are all amply stocked for fishing. The children will also have an opportunity to learn about Texas Longhorn cattle. Our experienced staff will give daily hands on lessons about the cowboy culture including but not limited to: roping; trail herding; camping; Dutch oven cooking; Cowboy music, poetry, and art and care of the livestock. There are no written tests and no films, ONLY HANDS ON SKILLS.
On the last night the children are at camp, Parents, you will have an opportunity to join us for Parent's Night, where you will enjoy a free dinner courtesy of the Cowboy Camp. With enthusiasm and pride you will hear your son or daughter tell you about all that they learned and how they became real cowboys. Parents, this camp would be the perfect opportunity to give your child the chance to take care of a horse before you BUY one! By sending your child to our camp, you give them the knowledge to develop a lasting relationship with horse, build new friendships and HAVE THE TIME OF THEIR LIVES!
The Cowboy Camp has its very own riding instructor who has many skills, including the breaking and training of horses and ponies from a very young age. He has also been employed as a Law Enforcement Officer from the City of Dresden for the past 5 years. David has the knowledge to care for the safety of your child and the horse that is chosen for them. Along with David, there will be several experienced, reliable, knowledgeable and proven riding assistants and camp counselors available to take care of your child during every aspect of their Cowboy Camp experience.
