Now that I have the '97 GT-S with a manual transmission, I
have a little more room to work with. Instead of re-installing the RS
Akimoto tube between the VAF and the throttle body, I have
attached it to the front of the VAF and have turned it down to
act more as cold air intake. There is a sizeable opening in the
splashguard through which I had hoped cooler air will flow into
the intake. I never had the chance to run a duct up to it, but
that may help it along a little. A nice 3" diameter duct
would be able to be fitted directly into the Funnel Ram of the
filter.
I had a problem with the clamp coming loose. As you can see, it didn't fit perfectly into the VAF. A few hard launches at the track knocked it loose and I simply took of the tube and attached the filter to the VAF for the time being.
After the problem with the tube coming loose, I decided to put the tube back where it originally was, between the throttle body and the back of the VAF. Since the new Probe was Laser Red and not Boysenberry, I had the purple anodizing removed and then had it re-anodized clear. Then I simply painted the rim around the top of the filter red to match the car.

What you may notice on this intake installation that wasn't on the other one is that the front factory duct doesn't simply blow air near the filter. With my new found expertise in "custom intake fabrication", I made it possible for the factory duct to actually "plug into" the the Funnel Ram! It may seem like a minute difference, but it's not. I was able to achieve much faster 1/4 mile times with this intake than with the previous one. My average times dropped from 15.4x's to 15.3x's simply by changing the intake setup. |
I personally had an excellent experience
with this intake and would recommend others to make
similar ones on their PGTs. In my opinion, this is a great setup for those who fear water ingestion from cold air pipes and ram-air setups. There is better air flow than the stock setup and it is still kept reasonably cool by the factory duct. Since I don't fear cold air pipes, this isn't my last intake mod! |
