After the back-pressure of the exhaust had been relieved with the addition of the Flowmaster muffler, the next logical step was to work on the intake. Since more air is now able to get out of the engine, air flow into the engine would be the next bottleneck that would need to be relieved.
Since Speed & Truck World did my Flowmaster and Bosal tip setup, I returned there to inquire about an intake upgrade. At that point in time, there were relatively few choices as far as intake upgrades were concerned. Other than strapping a conical filter to the factory airbox, the only other options were a drop-in style filter or an HKS kit. Well, I had already decided that I didn't like the way the HKS kit looked, wasn't overly thrilled by the conical idea, and definitely wasn't going for a drop-in!
While I sat there looking at intake tubes for every other car ever built, I began to feel a little discriminated against. There were tubes for Civics, Accords, Integras, Eclipses, Mustangs, RX-7s, Miatas, and even pick-up trucks! Why not one for the PGT?!?
So, I finally inquired about making an intake specifically for my car. The sales person said that they could probably do it, but for the right price, of course. With a Racing Sports Akimoto intake kit for the Honda Preludes and some miscellaneous hardware, they came up with my first intake mod.
After the accident which claimed the life of my '96 PGT, I removed the intake from it in anticipation of re-fitting it to my new PGT. That was when I learned exactly how little effort it took to "custom make" an intake! When I purchased my '97 PGT-S, I re-installed the intake myself and also experimented with some changes.
After hearing about the Hotshot cold-air pipes, I knew that I would eventually want one. Even though I was saving for nitrous oxide, when my friend Eddie said that he carried them, I just couldn't help myself.
So you think that I couldn't possibly have any more intake mods? Wrong! While the Hotshot cold air pipe is by far the best performing intake I have had, it still utilizes the factory elbow between the back of the VAF and the throttle body. So? Well, unless you haven't noticed by this site and my car, I am very much into aesthetics. Besides, I needed a solid place to tap the NOS nozzle!
OK, OK....only one more. I promise that this is the absolute last intake setup that I will make! If you looked at Full Hotshot Intake setup above, you probably noticed that the tube between the throttle body and VAF isn't exactly a perfect fit. To correct this, I fitted the old RS Akimoto tube and the Hotshot cold air pipe together.
Have a look at the Intakes section for other options and manufacturers of intakes for the Probes.
