Singles get together with a purpose

Group members help others while helping themselves

A new organization for singles in Rochester isn't a match-making service.

It's main goal is to bring singles together to volunteer.

Single Volunteers of Rochester officially formed in September, becoming the local chapter of the national, non-profit organization Single Volunteers based in Washington, D.C.

Cindy Joanning and Carol Lammers, members of the group's executive committee, said it's a chance for singles to do "something of value" while meeting other singles.

"It's hard to get people together unless you have a purpose," Joanning said.

Helping others is the group's purpose.

Members work with community organizations to plan volunteer events for a group of six to eight people at a time.

Since it began, the group has volunteered with Rochester Area Habitat for Humanity, Channel One food shelf, Arthritis Foundation and Girl Scouts.

Lammers said the group seeks volunteer opportunities that would interest men and women.

"We do find women are the first ones to volunteer," Lammers said. "Men you have to prod a little more."

Carl Voss, who served as project leader when the group recently worked on a Habitat for Humanity house, said he'd volunteered on his own before joining Single Volunteers, but "it's always been the most rewarding when it's in a group," Voss said.

Families have organizations devoted to them and couples can volunteer together but singles needed a social avenue for their altruistic ways, Joanning said.

"This is to give people who are single and alone someone to communicate with" while they're making a difference in the community, she said.

Although singles may date after meeting in Single Volunteers of Rochester, the group doesn't arrange dates.

"We can't count it out, but we're not doing the arranging," Joanning said.

Membership in Single Volunteers of Rochester is free and open to area adults 21 and older. Besides seeking members, the group is looking for organizations that may need a group of volunteers for a one-time or short-term project.

Happy New Year, Cindy!

Thank you for your efforts on behalf if the Arthritis Foundation at the Giftrap Fundraiser. I would like to thank all the volunteers who helped with the event. Perhaps you can route my thank you or let me know the most efficient way to do that. If you have any feedback on the event, I would appreciate it. How many volunteers did you have for the event? There might be another event coming up in the Rochester area that would be a fun group event. I will contact you when I have more details. I look forward to working with your group again.
