Although Changelings possess some Arts which allow them to withstand and recover from damage with greater ease than mortals, they are still very much delicate creatures, particularly when compared to such Prodigal combat machines such as vampires or werewolves. The balance between faerie and mortal halves results in a creation of a being that is both finely balanced and yet vulnerable in two worlds.

![]() Chimerical damage represents damage caused to a changeling's faerie mein, and is not detectable to unenchanted beings ["It's all in your mind, sir."]. A changeling may be in great pain from a chimerical sword wound, but normal mortals will be unable to treat or even see anything other than someone doing an excellent rendition of a person in pain. A changeling "killed" by chimerical damage does not truly die, but merely falls unconscious and forgets her faerie nature for a time; the number of Banality Traits she possesses determines how long she remains comatose, and what of the Dreaming she remembers on waking. Chimera, chimerical weapons, and most sorcery inflicts chimerical damage, unless otherwise noted. Chimerical damage may also be aggravated. ![]() At a cost of three Glamour and one Willpower, a Changeling can force the real world to recognise the truth of their fae mein. This is generally called "the Wyrd" by most Kithain who speak of it at all. To some extent, this could be considered forcibly enchanting all in the vicinity, but it also accomplishes more than that. All chimerical items and companions that the fae is carrying at the time become real as well: weapons do actual damage, hawks can attack, and a troll gains great strength. On the other hand, and damage the Kithain suffers w2hile calling upon the Wyrd is also considered Actual Damage, even if caused by chimerical sources. If slain while calling upon the Wyrd, the Changeling dies. As you might guess, this is often pointed out to be a breach of the Escheat - specifically the Right of Ignorance, although some Kithain point out that by risking real death from chimerical sources, this could be considered a breach of the Right of Rescue as well, as the Kithain who calls upon the Wyrd risks death unnecessarily, and all other Kithain are obliged by the Escheat to protect that life. |

![]() You know how most of this works. In essence, this is injury to the Seeming; injury that the rest of the world is willing to accept as "real." ![]() A changeling can choose to spend a Glamour Trait to heal one Health Level's worth of chimerical, non-aggravated damage. Glamour cannot be directly applied to actual damage (although there are some arts which can accelerate healing). Health levels, normal or chimerical, can be healed by spending nights sleeping undisturbed in a Freehold, dreaming near the Balefire which burns in the hearth of every holding. Health levels lost to cold iron in any form are always considered aggravated actual damage, and each such wound level suffered also garners the changeling a temporary Trait of Banality. Cold iron is BAD. Changelings slain through cold iron shall never again be reborn to the Dreaming, or in mortal form. Their faerie soul has been expunged forever. ![]() As mentioned above, Cold Iron [iron, not steel] is affects fae strongly. While in the possession of such objects, a Kithain is one Trait down on all challenges and has her maximum Glamour reduced by one Trait. Weapons forged of Cold Iron inflict aggravated (real) damage to Changelings and give them one point of Temporary Banality. Further explanation of damage types can be found here. |
Prepared by Richard Chilton, RST Canada, from 4.7, Prime 3, section 3.4 of the Camarilla rules. Approved by Canada's NST, Wade Jones, NST USA/Canada. NOTE: The Canadian weapon rules are not a 'house rule set' but an extension to 4.7 based on the rule: Each National Storyteller may amend the weapon availability chart based on their countries laws and regulations. The Use of Firearms in Canada Having firearms is one thing, using them is another. Any public use of firearms threatens the Masquerade. Due to Canada's weapon laws the use of firearms during the commission of crimes is rare. When guns are used it generally prompts the police to start a major investigation (minimum of Police 4 to affect it). Fully automatic weapons are much rarer; for example during a recent gang war in Montreal between the Hell's Angels and the Rock Machine for control of the city's drug trade no fully automatic weapons were used. Rather than risk the police pressure that would come from using machine guns or fully automatic assault rifles both sides used a series of bombs to kill each other. When such weapons are used the Police will launch a massive investigation, requiring a minimum of Police 6 to affect it, and a minimum of Media 6 to quell the uproar (front page news stories, editorials, in depth investigative reports, etc). If this happens, odds are politicians will get involved, requiring at least Politics 4 to silence the political outcry. As an alternative, it may be possible to hand the police a scapegoat. If this is tried remember that merely confessing and knowing the details of a crime is not enough for a guilty plea - corroborating evidence must be produced or the judge will order a trial. Does all this sound a bit extreme? Well, the last time someone used pistols and semi-automatic weapons in a rampage a national day of mourning was declared and several new gun laws were past. The Criminal Code of Canada lists several banned weapons - weapons that no private citizen can ever hope to legally own. Any character the police find carrying firearms without the appropriate license will face arrest on firearm charges. See Dark Alliances (Vancouver by Night) for the WoD view on Canada's old weapons law - they've been strengthened since then. While dealing with the use of weapons, there is something more I must add about the sometimes target of weapons - the police. In August 1998 an undercover officer was knifed to death by a prostitute in Toronto. That was the first on duty cop killed that year and (as of September 1999) the last on duty officer killed in Canada. His funeral was a major event and was attended by hundreds of police from across the county. We are talking about massive media coverage and the incidence being mentioned in Parliament. Just something to keep in mind. Police (4): Pistol, Heavy Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun, Armor Piercing and Incendiary ammunition, and Ballistic Vest Police (5): Reinforced Vest, Sniper Rifle, Submachine Gun Street (3): Rifle Street (4): Pistol, Shotgun Street (5): Heavy Pistol Underworld (2): Shotgun Underworld (3): Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun, Heavy Pistol, and Ballistic Vest Underworld (4) Submachine guns, Sniper Rifle, Reinforced Vest, Armor Piercing and Incendiary ammunition. Underworld (5): Assault Rifle and Flame Thrower Legality obtaining weapons. Obtaining a FAC (Firearm Acquisition Certificate) is hard work. You need ID and references that will pass the police background check that goes back at least five years. A good source for more information is Canadian Firearms Centre web page found at http://www.cfc-ccaf.gc.ca/ All paperwork concerning firearms passes through the local police, the RCMP, and the new Fire Arm Registry Office. To get a gun legally, you need a legal identity (usually Bureaucracy 5), proof you've passed a safety course, a recent photo (with the photographer swearing the guy in the photo is you), two references (who WILL be contacted and possibly subjected to a background check), a signature from any partner or spouse (who will be contacted), and information about any previous partner or spouse. You usually must also be able to visit with the police during normal business hours. Expect 6 - 18 months for all the paperwork to be processed. |
