This is our Captain's assessment of the first game of
the season.
Here is il capitano's view of how things went on our
second day out!
Here is the Geordie's view of our third match.
As you can see from the table above, we lost 4:2 to the KKK - Kirby's
Killer Knights.
Nowhere Men were knocked out of the LTKO in the 1st round by University B. By defaulting on boards 5 & 6, we gave ourselves little chance of progressing. The good news however, is that Roger got his 1st win of the season and new recruit Natasha showed the University team why they should have let her play for them! Nowhere Men will now take part in the Plate competition.
WE WON !!! Well played everyone. For some reason better known to myself I elevated myself to board 2 and lost. I didn't play badly I just didn't play well enough. Well done to Ian Jennings who drew - oh and thanks for the lift! . Also well done to Keith and Laurence who both won. Sorry you didn't get a game Paul. Tough luck Tim. Anyway, we won 3.5 to 2.5 overall. Hooray !
Hard luck team! A closely fought contest. Congratulations to Ian for his
first win and to Laurence for winning from a cramped, difficult
position. Keith was a real gentleman for refusing to win on time and Tim
was very unlucky not to at least draw.
The last match of 2004 was played as part of the 'Plate' competition. The result was rather miserable since we had defeated Lady Anne's earlier in the campaign. Both teams defaulted a board and each player played two games. Only our illustrious captain managed to salvage anything from the evening. Well done Roger!
The Xmas excesses seem to have taken their toll ! Alas we could only muster a 5 man team against Shepherds 2 but I must say they sportingly agreed to a five board match. Our only beacon in the winter darkness was Laurence who won a long game. For a commentary on this game click here. I was completely out played - my main hope was that my opponent seemed to be a near terminal case of bronchial pneumonia. (Un)fortunately he survived !!! No doubt he was planted there to spread this to our team - his team of course having a secret vaccine.
Rejoice! Rejoice!
I echo the words of a batty, but strident, old hag uttered when
the might of the British empire recaptured South Georgia and the
three Argentinians who were guarding it.
Yes, last night brought tears of joy to my eyes as we quashed
the mighty Danger Squares. Laurence emerged victorious from a
tussle with the rather intimidating Sean McDonald.
John managed to keep his cool under the pressure of the pacing
Richard Alliss and notched up a magnificent draw. Apparently,
if his German had been better (so Laurence informs me) he would
have realised that all he needed to win was a Zugswang, or
something similar. I always believe in not touching ones wang
unless it is absolutely necessary!
Paul broke his recent lean patch to outsmart Chris Conlin in a
game of guile and subtlety.
Natasha scored a wonderful draw against the Eastern European
tactics of Paul Masiak.
I myself supped from the sweet cup of success in a tactically
risky game against the impetuous Alisdair Roberts. The game is
reproduced on the Games page for your
amusement. Alistair beat me in the club championship recently
(who hasn't?) so I felt a little redressing of the balance was
necessary!
Bad luck to Keith who was distracted by the pacing boy and the impetuous kid as they tried to work out how to have prevented my win - alas too late.
If any body wants a PGN (portable game notation) viewer,
download winboard.exe - you'll find it on google. It
allows you to play your games through on screen.
Next game February 3 against the University at the
University.
Well played team. We achieved a
very creditable draw since we were a man down because Ian
was ill. I'm sure you will join with me in wishing him a
speedy recovery. I continued on my roller coaster winning
streak - 2 in a row now !! - by preventing my opponent from
developing a single attack. I probably played the Ruy Lopez
but with my knowledge of chess openings being what it is, I
may well have played something else!! John and Laurence
notched up draws and Paul continued his recovery with a
convincing victory. Keith was unlucky to lose by not
playing as well as his opponent - quite a common reason for
failure!!.
After managing to get beaten after 30 minutes, I have concluded that I am a disgrace to the game and I have decided to eat my hat. Does anyone know a nice recipe? The rest of you indecisive bunch all drew - what sort of wishy - washy performance is that?
Better to die attempting the impossible
than to lose. I have decided to ban you all from sex the night
before a match as this is a well known method of increasing
alertness. I will therefore be selling chastity belts tomorrow
lunchtime.
Next game is against Conquerors at home
on 17 march.
This match was full of mystery and intrigue! Richard Hardy texted Laurence to say that he would be playing for Conquerors and suggested that he might prefer to play for Lady Anne's 1st team instead! (Why?) Richard had also said that he could not get a team. So it was surprising that Conquerors had 7 players on the evening and Richard was not one of them. Apparently RI Kings had been due to play University A who defaulted the match 6 -0 and so half the Kings team raced over to the Royal Oak to give us a good hiding instead! After much fiddling with the team order, it was decided that Owen Robson would sit out and Barry Taylor would play board one. Laurence thought this was because he had offered Owen a draw in the bar before the game and Owen just could not face another tedious Caro Kann Defence! Imagine his surprise when Laurence played the Najdorf instead! Anyway, for some reason Owen got very upset with Richard and is not speaking to him or playing for him again.............Watch this space! Enough of this. The match began with a quick win for our illustrious, self-effacing captain Roger. Then Paul managed to gain a very creditable draw after being a pawn down against Katie. Keith had to suffer a hammering at the hands of Katie's brother.....a tough one, but John pulled off a win in an even position against a time-troubled Sri. Barry had offered Laurence a draw once his attack had fizzled out (White players are always doing that). However, it was a very lively encounter with many complications which left both players in time trouble and a draw was the eventual outcome. Finally, Natasha suffered from the luck of the Irish and was checkmated by the man who presses his clock with the wrong hand. After 70 years playing chess you'd think he would know better.............bless!
After a gruelling season we managed
to achieve a draw against the legal brains of LAM 2. I think we
all deserve a jolly good pat on the back. In my case a rabbit
punch between the shoulder blades would be more appropriate as I
played the most convoluted and over-crowded apology for a game -
though all credit to my opponent Mick Beavers who saw through my
lack of strategy. In the end we both had 1 minute, but he had 2
queens!! I think the team finished second bottom but we
actually may have finished last - I need to check.
I am currently thinking of moving a
motion of no confidence in myself as captain. Anybody else want
to do it or shall I stumble on for another year? I would like
to take this opportunity to thank Laurence for all the effort he
has put into the website which is truly magnificent. I would
like to thank myself for putting the photos on it - a feat of
great technical virtuosity.
Thankyou all for responding with
great alacrity to my never ending requests that you respond to
to my e mails - talk about tortured English!!
