One or two people have mentioned that I have been spelling some of the names wrong in the Evening league results. The reason is quite simple. A great many captains don’t understand the meaning of the words ‘legible’ and ‘block capitals’. Tim gives me copies of the result cards to include in the newsletter, but, in all honesty, it is impossible to read some of the names. Rather than try to guess at a spelling, from now on, if I can’t read it, the player(s) concerned will just go under AN Other. That way, maybe the players that are affected may just badger their team captain to write their name in English rather than Swahili !

Summer tournament

At last! The tournament finally ended when Patrick Gower beat Paul Barber in the final, played on the last day in November!

York and District Schools Championships

Held, as usual, at the Guildhall, 62 players contested the team and individual events. Many thanks to Pete Cloudsdale for letting me have the results.

Team: 1st Ampleforth, 2nd= Scarcroft and Millthorpe.

Individual : 1st Chetan Deva (Amplethorpe), 2nd Joseph Crawley (Amplethorpe), 3rd Fahad Yousif (Archbishop Holgate), 4th Patrick Gower (Millthorpe), 5th Jean-Luc Weller (Scarcroft).

Other prizes were awarded to Pierre Weller (Scarcroft), Jason Lawn (Ebor), Katie Keggie (Tadcaster Grammer) and Elliott Warriner-Bacon (Lord Deramore)

Odds and Ends

Pete Watson’s Christmas games night is on Sunday, 19th December. Pool, dominoes, 5’s and 3’s and darts take place. A free supper and (usually) cheaper beer are on offer.

The Christmas carols night is on Tuesday, 21st December, and the last snooker night this year is on Saturday, 18th December.

Nostalgia ain’t what it used to be. I’ve been trying for a while to get hold of a copy of an article which appeared in the British Chess magazine about Mikhail Tal in the 1970’s. Eventually, I contacted the BCM shop in London, who found it, but the only way I could get my hands on it was to pay for the whole years cloth bound issues. I’m glad I did.

For the princely sum of £10.50, I had a journey down memory lane that made me realise just how ancient I am! 1974. The year that Bill Hartston was our best player (the book has his wins against Larsen and Portisch, and a draw against Karpov which he should have won), Keene made his first GM norm at the Nice Olympiad, Tony Miles won the World Junior Championship, the Benko gambit was still known as the Volga gambit, 2. f4 was considered ‘tame’ against the Sicilian, and the Trompovsky is listed under ‘Irregular openings.’ Karpov was on his way to becoming world champion, the England team were the only team at the Olympiad in the top section without a GM in the team, we won the Clare Benedict, Hartston beat Basman in a playoff to win the 1973 British championship, there was a 7 way tie in the championship that year, and the first World Chess Computer championship took place. And 99% of it is in descriptive notation.

There is something like 480 odd pages in it, and for the price, is exceptional value. They also had bound volumes of both earlier and later years, so if anyone wants a trip down memory lane, or just a good value book, got in touch with the BCM shop.

And the article I was looking for? Tal did a simultaneous exhibition in Liverpool. If anyone ever gets disillusioned about this silly game we play, go to the games section, and find out just how entertaining, and simple, Tal makes it look.

There is an article in the December issue which reads ‘After Owen had beaten Skipworth once again in July 1874 …….. etc’. I am not that old!

Else where, Bill Hartston mentions that he was always told that it was good policy to repeat position when playing Bent Larson. The reason being that since Larson rarely played for a draw, he would usually play an inferior continuation, rather than take the draw. Sound advice, unfortunately on the occasion of Bill’s game against Bent, he played a stronger move!
