Comic Movies Still Rock; 'Spider-Man 2'. Wanna know why 'Spider-Man 2' may become the best comic movie franchise of all time? (And this says a LOT from a Batman fan.) It's because you see PARKER, not Spider-man, grow in each film. The movies aren't just about Spider-Man kicking a villain's butt across NYC. It's not just about him swinging along the skyline so we can marvel at CGI. It's about Parker coming to terms with his life; his powers and responsibilities, figuring out MJ, worrying about Aunt May and remembering NOT TO WORRY TOO MUCH. This is about a LIFE that is vastly complicated by super powers. Sure, over-the-top villains like Bullseye and The Joker are fun. However the reason you watch a movie is the HERO, and seeing your hero grow up is a beautiful thing to see.
Ok, Enough with the Tricks Already; 'The Village'. First, I DID like the movie. Second, Shyamalan has GOT to stop with these twists. All I did through the entire movie is wait for The Twist. Heck, that's what EVERYONE did with this movie; do we see dead people, who's the villain, what's with the water. I never stopped... and when you found out the twist either you were pleasantly surprised... or you wanted to walk out of the theater. To say Shyamalan is the next Spielberg is MUCH too early. I think he has a wonderful sense of pacing and a good eye for story telling. Unfortunately these twists are quickly turning into TRICKS. I'm hoping his next project is a bit more fun.
Sequels Can Rock; 'Shrek 2'. Ah, sequels. When they're good, they're amazing! When they're bad... you get flashbacks of Jar Jar Binks. Fortunately that's NOT the case here. Take funny characters, add MORE funny characters (Banderas is AWESOME as Puss In Boots) and let your writers just go nuts and DO NOT HOLD THEM BACK. The story was fresh, the dialog funny, and everything clicked on 75 cylinders to make the most money in this summer's box office... and also become the #10 highest grossing picture on the PLANET. Wow!
