Cyber Spawn 2; Spawn Regenerated series 28, McFarlane Toys
Meat and Potatoes; 5.0
Perks; .3.0
Homer Facor; 5.0
Description; one of Image’s flagship characters gets a makeover on a makeover.

Cyber Spawn 2 is a re-sculpting of the same figure from a long time ago.  The figure looks like a cross between the Alien and a mecha from an anime miniseries.  Spikes are everywhere on this figure, and one hand is transformed into a massive claw.  The figure is mostly a gorgeous dark red with a lot of black and silver highlights.  Although it doesn’t have a ton o’ articulation it has enough for some cool poses.

The figure comes with no extras but it is packed inside a huge blister box.  It makes a great display if you don’t want to take the piece out of the box.
Ah Spawn.  If there’s a figure that’s gone through a ton o’ makeovers it’s this guy.  Zombie, Ninja, Medieval, Manga, Samurai name the ones sitting on my shelf not far from the PC.  So aren’t I slamming these figures?  Aren’t these in the same vein as missile-firing, net-launching, machine-gun toting Wolverine/Spider-Man/Batman?  Not quite.  Ok, so in some ways it IS the same in that none of these other incarnations appears in the comics, and considering the genesis of the character, do you really need Manga Spawn?  On the other hand, if done WELL, just about anything can be fun, even something as cheese as an mecha-influenced Batman figure. Enter Cyber Spawn.  The first was actually rather ‘eh’.  It was all black, and looked more like a reject from ‘Alien 500’ then a Spawn figure.   McFarlane Toys has been doing new interpretations of their old figures.  Ok, it’s basically a gimmick to get you to buy more stuff, but if done well... the possibilities can be a lot of fun.  Case in point is Cyber Spawn 2.  Sweet!

Meat and potatoes are McFarlane at their best.  The entire figure looked like one of the Alien creatures got dropped into a vat of mechanical and anime parts.  There are spikes and giant blades all over the place on this thing, but it doesn’t lose the look of being a human being... well, a HUMANOID in this case.  The figure also preserves it’s tech-ish look with a ton o’ well sculpted pipes, tubes, and vents.  The figure is painted a beautiful, dark red with silver and black highlights.

And fortunately articulation hasn’t been sacrificed too much on this one.  Sure, it’s not as flexible as a Marvel Legends piece, but the legs and arms all move pretty well to give you a number of poses for display.

Perks are a problem.  It doesn’t come with any.  Although there isn’t anything that says Cyber Spawn has to have ‘stuff’ it’s still cool to have something with it.  It could use a hand weapon, a chunk of paneling and wall to make a display, just a bit extra ‘oomph’.  The one ‘perk’ which is kinda cool is the blister box shows the figure very well.  If you hate taking figure out of the package this is a great display box.

Homer factor is high just the same.  Spawn figures tend to bring out the best in McFarlane Toys, and anything even vaguely robot-ish is hard for me to resist.

All in all this is a dang good figure to have.  Although it could use some extras its still a great figure on it’s own.  Now if they could just create a new Cyber Violator... oooohhhhh...
