Since when did I become a Hulk fan? Well, one of the problems with Marvel Legends is the villain shortage. Granted, the villains used are great ones; Magneto, Dr. Doom, the Red Skull, and most recently a MASSIVE version of Apocalypse. Unfortunately, that still leaves a ton o' heroes with not many villains to take them on. Hey, it's a ying-yang thing on your shelf; if you have this many good guys, you GOTTA have this many bad guys to balance them. And some figures really do need their nemesis; Thor NEEDS Loki, the Silver NEEDS Thanos. Unfortunately, after getting the butt-kicking Silver Centurion... well, there isn't anything spectacular to pair with him. Then I got lucky; as I flipped through some fan pages, someone posed the Mecha Hulk figure with the Silver Centurion to duplicate the cover of 'Iron Man 200'. BINGO! The perfect adversary to the Crimson Avenger! So is he worth it considering I don't normally get Hulk figures? Actually, the figure is AMAZING in it's own right. The meat and potatoes keep with the ToyBiz tradition of being awesome. The figure is 6" tall hunched over, about 7" tall fully erect, and is about... oh, about 3 times more massive then the Silver Centurion. Yes, this is a HUUUUUUUGE figure, fitting the name The Hulk. Mecha Hulk is sculpted to look like... well, a mechanical version of the Hulk. It's not an especially Manga design, or old-school 30s look, more like a combination of assorted styles to create this massive, mechanical version of the Hulk. The sculpting on the figure captures amazing mechanical details like cables, tubes, and vents. The painting on the piece is simple; green and silver. However, the finish is applied so that the figure looks very tarnished and beaten, as if it's gone about 200 rounds with the Hulk. And then there's the articulation. Wow. The packaging says there's 46 points, which unfortunately I haven't found. However, the 28 I HAVE found are amazing. Perks are equally cool. The figure has a pair of missile launchers in it's chest and it comes with a tiny Gremlin figure that fits into the back. I could have sworn the Gremlin was one of the pilots of The Titanium Man. Oh well, who knows how the continuity has changed now. The Homer factor... well it depends. Frankly, I've never been a huge fan of the Hulk, and the style of the figure isn't quite what I look for in 'bots. But, as an adversary for Iron Man, he's PERFECT. The figure is huge and menacing, like the Titanium Man, so he makes the perfect antithesis to the sleek, smaller, Silver Centurion. All in all, he's a wonderfully done figure. Typical ToyBiz craftsmanship and fun perks lead to an outstanding figure. If you're a Hulk fan, you will LOVE this piece, and if you're just looking for a giant bad-guy to keep your heroes in line, you gotta snag this one. |
