Capt. America; Megamorphs, ToyBiz Meat and Potatoes; 2.0 Perks; 2.0 Homer Facor; 2.0 |
|||||||||
Description; Capt. America meets ‘Robotech’.
The figure stands approximately 7” tall in robot mode and has the general appearance of Capt. America, i.e. the red gloves and boots, et al. The ‘bot transforms into a helicopter mode with the chest opening to become the cockpit, the arms folding into the fuselage, and the legs folding in as well. It looks a bit like at AT-ST but with a giant rotor. The figure comes with a disc launcher, a giant ‘shield’ that also becomes the rotors, and a mini-figure of Capt. America that fits in a cockpit. |

Ya know, some toy ideas sound kinda stupid, but work. For instance, years ago Hasbro created he Total Justice line. Batman and Martian Manhunter created new technology for the heroes, blah, blah, blah. So everyone wore this special powered armor. Sounds horrible, but the figures were actually pretty cool, like the Superman figure. (link.) Each piece was very well done, and even the armor made sense... well, sort of... well, at least it was better then the usual weapons the umpteenth Batman figures were stuck with. Unfortunately the line didn’t last long, but all in all it was a nice attempt, and a number of off-the-wall characters were made, such as Hawkman and Black Lightening.
Flash forward and ToyBiz rules the superhero-market with Marvel Legends and the fantasy market with 'Lord of the Rings' figures. Outstanding sculpts, lots of characters, blah, blah, blah. Well, someone had the idea of making, gulp, TRANSFORMABLE ROBOTS for the heroes. Now who in their right mind would want Wolverine to pilot a giant robot? Is the Hulk smart enough to pilot anything? All right, so if you used the incarnation where Bruce’s mind was in the Hulk, ok, that would work. So I’m over-thinking this. Granted, it sounds kinda lame, but come on, this is ToyBiz! The makers of the amazing ‘LOTR’ line! The creators of Marvel Legends! Hey, if Hasbro could get ‘Total Justice’ to work, this should work, right? Right? Wrong, waaaaaaaaaaaay wrong. Meat and potatoes are less then ‘eh’. ToyBiz usually has outstanding sculpts on it’s figures that captures so many details the pieces look life-like. Not the case here. The ‘bot has some generic details, such as a few panel lines and rivets. However, considering who’s doing this, there should be a LOT more detail on this figure. No, it doesn’t have to be Kaiyodo level, but even Bandai’s cheaper US release figures have more detail then this. And articulation is severely lacking in ‘bot mode. Considering the butt-kicking work Hasbro has done with the ‘Transformers’ line, having a ‘bot with minimal range of motion isn’t a good sign. The perks are... oh the humanity. When I saw promo-shots of this thing, I saw an ostrich with a propeller. I hoped I was wrong, and normally when you actually GET the figure the final transformation is a lot better. Forget it. To complicate matters, the instructions are rather vague as to what gets moved where, and the actual figure doesn’t want to move very smoothly as you follow the directions. A perfect example of how sub-par the piece is where the tiny Capt. America figure is supposed to go. The instructions say just put him in the cockpit. There is no indication at all where the cockpit opens or how the figure stands in the directions. It just says put him in there. Well, considering I’ve been messing with these for ages, how hard could it be to figure out? I still have no idea where it’s supposed to go. Homer factor was high at first. Hey, it’s a robot AND a helicopter. I couldn’t resist. I should have. The good news is ToyBiz is creating a plethora of other outstanding products. The bad news is this ain’t one of them. I really looked forward to this line. I hope they get things better soon. Hey, chat a bit and talk to Takara. |
