'Roy, why don't you buy models?' People always wonder why. You would think since I love displaying and playing, er, I mean enjoying the aesthetic qualities of such fine craftsmanship I would love to put them together. WROOOOOOOONG! Ok, when I was a kid I did build assorted models, and it was kinda fun. However, the thought of taking 4 WEEKS to assemble a perfect grade Gundam kit make my teeth hurt. Ya know, if you're gonna charge me $120 for the kit, at least have the decency to put the freaking thing together! Miniatures are the same for me. Yes, they look very cool, blah, blah, blah. Unfortunately they also tend to be unpainted. AAAAAAAGGGGHHHHH! Well that isn't the case any more. A ton o' gaming systems use miniatures, and they're PRE-PAINTED. Hero-Clix, the new 'Star Wars' system, a flood of miniature game systems are out three but you don't need a ton o' paint, brushes, and eye-strain to have that beautiful look. I know, the purists are getting ready to hang me for saying that. Sorry folks, but I just don't have the time for it. Naturally, in light of the massive 'LOTR' flood, there is a miniature game system for it. Considering what the Battle at Pelennor Fields looked like in 'Return of the King' how could anyone resist! And amongst the scores and scores of Elves, Orcs, and humans, there was Aragorn in full Gondorian Armor. Could I resist? Of course not! What did I get for this? An absolutely gorgeous, tiny, piece for your shelf. Ok, remember this is a MINIATURE, not an actual action-figure, so the meat and potatoes are gonna be a bit skewed. The sculpting and paint... wow! Keep in mind this is a 3" tall figure, but the level of detail, ESPECIALLY since this is the Gondorian armor, is amazing. The links of the chainmail, even the design on the surcoat is recreated here. Articulation... well, what do you expect, this is a piece for a wargame! Do the pieces on a chessboard have moving limbs? The beauty of this piece is there IS some articulation. The figure is pre-sculpted so that Aragorn holds Anduril in front of him like a samurai sword. However those two arms have tiny joints in them so the arms move up and down. Also there are tiny joints in the 'elbow's so the arms can swivel and appear to straighten. Bonus! Perks are also surprisingly good. Naturally he comes with Anduril... well, sort of. Ok, nit-picking moment here. Technically the hilt of Anduril has a leather grip close to the cross-guard, then one hand-width down the grip is gone and it's just metal. On this teeny version of Anduril the entire hilt is black from the leather grip. I know, I know, I'm being VERY nit-picky. Just a little something to point out if y'all wanna be anal. Be that as it may, Aragorn does come with a REMOVABLE sword. This is very cool since this allows Aragorn to be posed with either no sword or the sword in just one hand. On top of that there's also a little patch of ground FOOT PEGS to act as a stand! Ah, nothing like your figure having firm footing while on display. Homer factor? I know, this is the THIRD version of Aragorn in this armor (First super-posable, then on Brego.) that I've reviewed. Hey, I happen to LOVE the character. And besides, this piece is perfect to have on your desk at work or beside your PC at home. A little 'LOTR' fix is a good thing. Over all this piece is a very pleasant surprise. No, this isn't the definitive figure with all sorts of bells and whistles and such. But if you're looking for a cute stocking-stuffer for a holiday or just something cool but unobtrusive for your desk, this is the thing to get. |
