Ok, so what exactly can you miss when you have a movie that's 3 1/2 hours long? In the case of 'Return of the King', apparently 50 minutes of a LOT more stuff. The Extended Edition is out just in time for Christmas... well, assuming you WAIT long enough to open it on Christmas day. If you're a die-hard fan, you could go on ad nauseum about what is missing. (No ranting, please.) For the MOVIE fan, there are some gems such as Gandalf's clash with the Witch King, and the confrontation with the Mouth of Sauron! ... no, that name doesn't send shivers up my spine, either. 'Hey, it's the Big Toe of Sauron!' 'Quick, get some foot powder and Odor Eaters!' Ah, but the Mouth actually looks pretty cool. Early promo-shots show the character has a mouth a LOT bigger then Steven Tyler... heck, bigger then the mouth of the shark from 'Jaws'. Yeah, it's pretty honking big, and full of VERY impressive teeth. Could ToyBiz resist? Heck no! ToyBiz packed this new character in the 'Black Gate of Mordor' set. Is it worth $50 to snag this thing? Pretty dang close. The meat and potatoes on this figure are over-all outstanding. ToyBiz has done an amazing job creating this gorgeous line, and making it affordable. Hint, hint to McFarlane Toys. Unlike the Aragorn figure with Breego, this figure uses the usual ball-joints in the hips and double knee-joints so the Mouth can ride it's horse. This works MUCH better, and the figure can be displayed riding the horse, or standing pretty easily. And the head-sculpt... how could they edit this monster from the theatrical print? The head and helmet look like a crown of bones. And then there is a huge, toothy mouth that would make Godzilla envious. VERY creepy, and very well done. The horse packed with the Mouth is also up to par with Breego. It's well sculpted, and wearing very well designed battle armor. The one TINY problem is the paint on the arms doesn't appear finished. Most of the figure is painted with black, glossy paint. However the arms appear to be this flat, gray color. Very odd. The perks are quite impressive. The horse is beautifully made and comes with the 'galloping action' like Breego. The Mouth comes with a cloth cape and chaps. Both pieces are tattered and wrinkled to give the nice, well-worn look of a demon who's had to come a loooooooooong way through Mordor for 10 minutes of screen time. Naturally the figure comes with a removable sword and scabbard, but for some reason this weapon is shorter then Anduril. Yep, the Mouth has sword envy. Homer factor? Pretty good but not great. Yes, this figure looks gorgeous, blah, blah, blah. On the other hand, it's easy to pass on it since you can only get it for $50 along with a bunch of other figures you may already have; cloth-robe Gandalf the white, Gimli with his cloak, Super Poseable Aragorn, and Legolas. I got lucky in that I didn't have the cloth-robe Gandalf that's packed with the Mouth. However, if you're a thorough collector, you've probably got the figures that come with the Mouth already. doh! So is it worth it? It really, really depends. If you DON'T have most of the figures in this pack it's definitely worth it. But if you already have the others, be warned on the price-point. |
