||||||||
Description; the Extra-Terrestrial Hunter brought to life. Scar Predator is 8" of butt-kicking alien hunter. The figure is decked out in the classic armor; huge helmet over it's dread-lockes, shoulder pads, greaves, gaunlets with flip-open panel, and chest plate. Like the film version, the figure is armed with the standard shoulder-cannon, giant blades on both fore-arms, a spear, and a massive boot knife. The figure's armor is painted in gun-metal grey while the alien parts are painted in mottled brown. The figure comes with a stand that looks like slabs of granite and the boot-knife and cannon are both removable. |

Ages ago, I saw 'Predator 2' and frankly don't remember much... accept that wonderful scene of Danny Glover stepping inside the Predator Ship, gazing up at the wall of skulls, and seeing an Alien skull! Rumors came and went for YEARS about the movie. Then finally, after a ton o' false starts, it was REAL; two modern, sci-fi legends clash on planet Earth. How's the movie? Well, I saw it and it's actually not bad. Ah, but that's something for another article down the road. Now the toys, ah yes, the toys! McFarlane Toys scored the license for both properties quite a while ago, so you can imagine the anticipation... and the dread. So what do you get? Something that is very articulated and is great to display AND play with? Or do you get a stunning sculpt that is wonderful to look at but just sits on your desk? Well, good news toy fans, McFarlane kicked some serious butt on this one. And those who are regular readers are wondering what the big deal is since there's already a Predator piece reviewed. Oh, but this ISN'T like that one, not by a long shot. The meat and potatoes... ya know, before ToyBiz and DC Direct and everyone else jumped on the bandwagon, McFarlane was THE place for sculpting and articulation. No one came CLOSE to doing this kind of work. Over the years, everyone slooooowly caught up to the level of craftsmanship McFarlane Toys created. But there is something special about McFarlane toys, whether it's the grotesque nature of the 'Oz' toys or the amazing detail of 'Movie Maniacs', there's something 'sweeeeeeeeeeet' about their work. Case in point is this Predator figure. The sculpture of the figure is stunning, from the pits and dings on the creature's armor to the amazing detail on the flip-open control panel on his left forearm. Even the giant blades the Predator wields during the movie are recreated so well, showing more pits and scratches. The articulation is also stunning in this one, which is a VERY pleasant surprise considering what happened with the Neo figure. The Predator figure uses simple ball-and-socket joints rather then the bizarre set-up used on Samurai Spawn. Whew. Unfortunately the figure isn't quite as flexible as Samurai Spawn, but still muuuuuch better then the recent statue-like pieces McFarlane has put out. The perks are equally cool. Basic stuff; stand sculpted to look like the temple floor from the movie, removable knife, removable shoulder-cannon, and spear just like the movie. Everything is beautifully sculpted and can be used by the figure. There is one problem, though. The giant blades on the figure's wrists are NOT removable, and neither is the faceplate. These aren't a huge problem on the figure, but considering the other outstanding details, like the moving shoulder cannon, it shouldn't be too hard to have these pieces be removable. Also for the sake of packaging I would have thought it would be easier to have stuff come off. Homer factor is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay high. Not only is the Predator a great character, but the version in this movie is armed to the teeth with a ton o' accessories. So many possibilities. Hehehehehehehehehe. The final product is an amazing figure that captures the feel of the movie and is an awesome example of McFarlane Toys at it's best. |
