Description; the Black and Silver artillery-blasting armor is here! War Machine is based upon the armor that first appeared in IM #281. It has the basic IM look of boots, gauntlet, chest-plate, et al with some changes. The armor is silver and black, and it's armed with a massive cannon and missile launcher on the shoulders and extra weapons on the wrists. The figure is packed with a stand so WM can fly, and also plastic boot 'flames', 'missiles', 'cannon-fire', and 'repulsor blasts' which can be attached to the figure to recreate these abilities. |

War Machine! Lowe many years ago, for assorted plot reasons that seemed logical at the time, Tony was afflicted with... ya see, his spine was... oh never mind. By the time 'Iron Man' issue 281 of the original series came around, Tony was a weeeeeeeeee bit ticked at a group of high-tech ninjas called the Masters of Silence who kick serious super-powered butt. So what is Tony's response? No more wussy, non-lethal weapons; he created a suit of armor that was the deadliest thing ever; rocket launchers, energy-swords, flame-throwers, a massive chain-gun with multiple types of ammo, you get the idea. Even the Dept. of Defense would go 'Ya know, can we buy one?' Eventually, Jim Rhodes (Tony's buddy and pilot) was bequeathed this amazing set of armor that Tony called War Machine! Flash forward and ToyBiz is busy making Iron Man fanatics, er, freaks... um... people who like Iron Man very happy by re-creating some of the suits Tony's created over the past almost 50 years. (Wow, he has been around for a long time!) Naturally, how can you NOT re-create this suit of armor? Oh, you can't help it! So how is it? Well... it's reeeeeeeal close, but... Meat and potatoes... well, here's the problem. The figure itself is the usually outstanding craftsmanship that is ToyBiz. Amazing sculpting that captures every anal detail and tons o' articulation for a lot of posing possibilities. So what's the problem? Well, it's in the weapons. War Machine is armed with shoulder-mounted cannons and rocket-launchers. Now, on paper that sounds sooooooooooo cool! Hey, it's the fan-boy/girl in all of us, waiting to see these powerful weapons going off from shoulder mounts! Now, both weapons are well sculpted, and are designed to be removable. When the weapons are put on, they make the figure top-heavy and the figure can barely move it's head side-to-side. Another problem is that additional weapons mounted on the piece's wrists. These restrict the movement of the wrists. Normally this isn't a big deal. However, Iron Man armor always has palm-mounted repulsors, and the barrels for the weapons are placed in just the WRONG spot. War Machine can't move his hands up to fire his repulsors. Doh! Perks? Like the figure, it's a mixed bag. Again, the figure comes packed with a part of Galactus. I can take it or leave it, just as the case with the Doc Strange figure. A nice addition is a clear-plastic stand that should let you re-create flying poses. Yes, I said SHOULD. The stand is designed to be adjustable, but the connections are loose so the stand won't stay stationary. The figure also comes with clear plastic additions to duplicate the firing of War Machine's weapons and his boot-jets. The cannon and missile pieces are actually cool and work well. Unfortunately the other pieces don't attach well, which may just be figure I have. Homer factor? Oy... tough one. I'm an Iron Man freak, so how could I resist? And it's ToyBiz? This has got to rock, right? And it comes sooooooooooooooo close! There isn't a single BAD problem with the figure. It's just that there are so many LITTLE things that just aren't quite right, that it takes a great possibility and brings it down a few notches. Should you get it? If you can get it for a reasonable price and you're an IM fan, DEFINITELY. However, if you're looking for an outstanding display piece, well, be warned... |
