Coramonde Series
I read the two books of this series in high school when it
came out but don't remember it. I lost the books between
college and moving. I picked up a replacement copy from a
book sale to round out my collection of stuff I've read. I am
thinking there was a third book in the series, but I have not
looked on-line to see if my memory is correct.
- The Doomfarers of Coramonde (#1) -
- The Starfollowers of Coramonde (#2) -
Lester Del Rey
- The Best of Lester Del Rey - A collection of short works
written by Lester Del Rey. It's actually edited by
somebody else. It's part of an overall series of short
works of writers of science fiction's Golden Age.
Phillip K Dick
- The Man In the High Castle - I picked this up mostly
because it is famous. Sorry, but I didn't particularly
like it.
Gordon R. Dickson
War and Honor Series
- The Harriers (#1) - This is the only books in the series
that I have read. It was OK the first time.
William C. Dietz
- Legion of the Damned - The French Foreign Legion in
space, where the cyborgs are created from people who
almost died or were executed for a crime. A good military
science fiction story.
- Bodyguard -
Crisis of Empire (co-author with David
Drake)
Not bad. As is common with David Drake's work, it seems to
be based upon the Roman Empire. In this case, Julius Ceaser.
Larry Dixon
Co-author with Mercades
Lackey of numerous novels. See her entry for details.
Stephen R. Donaldson
The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant
I read the first trilogy in high school and loved it.
After that, I dont' know.
- Lord Foul's Bane (#1)
- The Illearth War (#2)
- The Power That Perserves (#3)
James Doohan
Flight Engineer Series (with S.M. Stirling)
Yes, the late Scotty from Star Trek co-wrote a
series.
- The Rising (#1) - This is the only one of the series I've
read. It was OK, but I don't think I'd look to buy more
in the series.
-
Gardner Dozois
- 7th Annual Best SF Stories of the Year - the importtant
story for gaming is "A Child of All Ages".
Gardner Dozois is the editor of the book of course, not
the author of the stories.
David Drake
David Drake
website
David Drakes website has comments on a lot of his books. I
recommend it for more information.
- Redliners -
- All the Ways to the Gallows - A set of humorous military
fiction stories.
- Lest Darkness Fall / To Bring the Light - Two seperate
novels in one volume, with the other one written by L. Sprague de Camp.
Lest Darkness Fall was written a long time ago
by de Camp. Both novels are time displacement novels. In Lest
Darkness Fall, the protagionist travels from 1930's
Rome to AD 300 or so Rome. To Bring the Light
has a Roman from the late Empire travel to the beginnings
of Rome and get the city started.
- Killer - nasty alien monster ends up in ancient Rome and
must be caught by intersteller agent without letting
Romans finding out about advanced civilization
- Patriots - I picked it up at a libary sale because it's a
David Drake novel. I have yet to read it.
- Seas of Venus -
- Surface Action -
- The Undesired Princess / The Enchanted Bunny - Two
seperate novels in one volume, with the other one written
by L. Sprague de Camp.
Crisis of Empire (various co-authors)
I've only read this one book. Not bad. As is common with
David Drake's work, it seems to be based upon the Roman
Empire. In this case, Julius Ceaser.
- An Honorable Defense (#1) -
- Cluster Command (#2) - co-author with William C. Dietz
- The War Machine (#3) - co-author with Roger McBride Allen
Hammer's Slammers Series
This is probably David Drakes most famous series of books.
I think I have read all of the books at one point or another.
Some of have been re-issued at various time but under
different titles with small amounts of additional material.
- Hammer's Slammers (#1)
- Counting the Cost - re-issued as Caught In the
Crossfire
- The Butchers Bill
- The Tank Lords
- Rolling Hot
- Paying the Piper
Lord of the Isles Series
I have just started this series, even though I've owned
the first book for a couple of years.
Northworld Series
I really liked all three of these books. One aspect I find
very interesting is that he started with the Norse Eddas as
an outline and turned it into a great fantasy story. At some
point, I would like to use the power suits in a fantasy
campaign. Yes, fantasy. The suits are very high tech, but the
society treats it as magic and does not
- Northworld (#1) - This is availiable as a free and legal
unencrypted download from the publisher's website Baen
Free Libary.
- Northworld: Vengeance (#2)
- Northworld: Justice (#3)
- Northworld Trilogy - single volume of the three books in
the series
Raj Whitehall Series
A very interesting series written around a super computer and
it's choosen human agent who tries to bring civilization back to
a number of planets after the fall of an interstellar empire. The
first set of books were co-authored with S.M. Stirling. The Tyrant
was co-authored by Eric Flint.
- The Forge (#1)
- The Hammer (#2)
- Warlord (#1 & #2) - This is compilation of The
Forge and The Hammer.
- The Anvil (#3)
- The Steel (#4)
- The Sword (#5)
- Conqueror (#3, #4, & #5) - This is a compilation of The
Anvil, The Steel, and The Sword.
- The Chosen (#6) - Raj (as a computer spirit) and Center
help a world based upon S.M. Stirling's Draka series.
- The Reformer (#7) - First book in a two book set of a
spin off of "The General" series. Another
alternate Roman Empire is shaken up by Raj Whitehall and
Center. For gaming, it's specifically useful in it's
discussion of how society moves from a Roman type tech
level to more advanced levels. The discussion takes place
over both books though.
- The Tyrant (#8) - Follow on book to "The Reformer".
Co-author was Eric Flint.
Ranks of Bronze Series
This started off with a single book, and then years later
other authors helped to add to the story arc.
- Ranks of Bronze (#1) - the originial book about a bunch
of Roman soldiers bought by aliens to fight their battles.
- Foreign Legions - additional stories by both David Drake
and others involving the Roman soldiers or another group.
- The Excaliber Alternative - a full length novel by David Weber set in
David Drake's universe
Terra Nova Series (with Ben Ohlander)
This was supposed to be a series, but I dont' think any
more books were published. A second book was actually written
though. .
- Enemy of My Enemy (#1) - Basic story is same as Romeo and
Juliet, but set in a future world. I didn't particularly
the book.
