How to set up a Website? Free space, search engines, etc.

Set up your Website

Sign up for free Web space
To set up your site, you’ll need space on a Web server. There are a lot of sites on the Net that give you free Web space. Select one that meets your requirements.

Create the content
Use an HTML editor to create the content. Or you could use the editor at these sites to do it.

Upload your site
After creating the Web pages, you’ll need to use an FTP program like WS_FTP. Once the site is up, type in the URL in your browser and check that every page is showing as you expected it to be. To be doubly sure, check in both Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator.

Redirect to some place easier to remember
When you set up your site on a free Web hosting service, the URL you get wouldn’t be very easy to remember. You could make use of the free URL redirection services available on the Web. Some popular redirection services

Launch your site at search engines
What’s the point of having a site if the world doesn’t know about it? Get listed in the major search engines. There are two ways to do it:
Automated submission There are a few sites on the Net that quickly submit your Website to many search engines at once. This is easy, but usually produces only mediocre results. Sites that do the submitting for you:
http://uswebsites.com/submit
http://www.netcreations.com/postmaster
http://addme.com
Manual submission: You could submit your site to each of the major search engines, one by one. Search engines have their own rules for indexing sites. So, you need to do quite a bit of homework on this. There is also software like Web Positiongold (http://www.webpositiongold.com) that can do the job for you.

Test your Web pages
When you’ve made your Website, it’s a good idea to test it out and see if there are no browser compatibility problems, and that the site is all fine-tuned and all the links are working. Many sites help you tune up your Website. Try http://websitegarage.netscape.com/jayde/, and http://www.pantos.org/atw/testing.html to check for usability and other parameters. And one of the best places to check out your site on all kinds of usability factors including spelling, go to http://netmechanic.com.
