Appalachian Trail, 2001
"Samwise" has completed her journey of discovery and determination. From early April 2001 through early October 2001 she was thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail, a wilderness foot path from Georgia to Maine. The trail winds through the Appalachian Mountains on land set aside by various owners, and managed by the non-profit Appalachian trail Conference.Everything that she needed was carried in her back pack (stove, bed, clothing, shelter, food, water, drugstore, library, kitchen sink, etcetera.)
For six months she hiked about 10-20 miles per day, traversing 14 states, 3 seasons, and over 2100 miles. Her daily joys, pain, achievements and struggles are recorded here.
Updates:In 2003 Samwise continued to feed her new-found addiction to long distance backpacking by hiking the Colorado Trail (CT). You can follow her CT trip here: www.zulie.com/ct.
In 2004 Samwise (and her webmaster Pippin) were afforded the opportunity to travel to west Africa and southern Africa. Journals and photographs from this trip are here: www.zulie.com/africa.
In 2005 Samwise and Pippin chose to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Samwise also took the opportunity to visit Uganda, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa before returning home. Journals and photographs from this trip are here: www.zulie.com/kili.
