August 27, Eliza Brook Shelter - mile 1786.6

Boy, am I glad I hiked that last rocky mile and a half down to the road yesterday, instead of staying up at the last shelter. I suspected it might rain last night, and sure enough, at 5:00 this morning, I heard the pitter-patter of rain drops on my tent fly. So I dashed an arm out to grab my socks drying on top, yanked them in and zipped the fly shut, and then listened to the rain beat down for the next three hours, feeling so thankful that I wasn't trying to navigate those treacherous wet rocks. I was perfectly content to sleep in for a while and then I read my book, formulating a plan. I figured I would wait it out until noon, and if it hadn't stopped raining by then, I'd pack up and go to the road a mere 1/4 mile down to hitch into the B&B in town. As is evident, it did stop, just long enough to get packed up and get a couple miles down the trail and then started drizzling again. Oh well, such is life, I guess. At least now I am relatively dry and cozy in the shelter. It's promising to be a chilly night, so again I'm glad I have my 20* bag.

Well, I've discovered that in the Whites, my pace is now 1 mile per hour, so I've had to revise my schedule yet again. I find one of my pet peeves has become people who catch up to me on the trail and then say something like "I can't believe I'm passing you! I am so slow!" and then they race by me, doing roughly 3x the pace I am. I wonder how I'm supposed to respond to that?
