September 1, Crawford Notch - mile 1823.1
![]()
For five months I've been wandering this path in the wilderness, and it's been everything and nothing like what I expected! I find it hard to believe that I've come so far, and even harder to believe how far I have yet to go. And best of all, today I have Tony here with me to celebrate - isn't life grand!
We are very fortunate to be staying in this little cabin here tonight; with the holiday weekend, everything in the area is booked full and extremely expensive. It took me a good half hour last evening to find us a hotel room in North Conway, about 15 miles away from the trail, but their rates went up substantially for tonight. Luckily Tony had passed by these rustic cabins on his way in last night and stopped to find out the rate ($30) so we took a chance and drove back here today. They had one open, since someone left, and I think we got it by about 30 seconds, since someone else came up to the owner only moments after Tony had claimed it!
We've actually spent most of our day driving around, getting supplies and groceries and searching for my missing mail drop. We drove all the way up to Pinkham Notch, where all the mail for Crawford Notch comes through, but they only had a small box that Mom sent. The only thing I can guess is that I messed up the address on the master list that I left, because Tony is sure that it said the Gorham PO, when I know it should have been an actual street address for them. So presumably it's sitting at the Gorham post office but we didn't get there until after it closed, so I'll find out a few days from now when I actually hike in. Today we had to use plan B, go to the grocery store and buy what I needed there instead. I can pretty much replace everything that was in the box, except for my next map. I'm pretty upset not to have a map because I rely on it like crazy, plus in this next section I want to know all my alternate trails and roads in the event I run into any bad weather. I've got 25 miles above the tree line to hike and that's not a place to be if the weather is bad. But there' nothing I can do about it, so I'm going to have to make do - same as I have before.
