September 7, Hiker's Paradise, Gorham, NH - mile 1870.2

I'm back for a second night here at the hostel in Gorham and this time I've actually walked here! I must admit it's pretty handy to have access to some of these towns from 2 different roads so that you can go in for a good meal and a cheap stay three days apart. I hiked the last 4 miles from my stealth site this morning in very good time. If only there were a few miles of nice, flat trail like that every day! Then my poor knees would get a little break now and then.

I considered getting a room tonight in the hotel, but even though they're a reasonable price, the hostel is hard to beat at $12. I asked to go on the third floor this time which I hear is typically much quieter, and so far, I like it a lot. It's a lot cleaner and the beds are much nicer up here, and so far it's only me and one other lady who I haven't yet seen because she's out slack-packing today. It would be so nice if we were the only two here tonight - we could each have our own bedroom!

In fact, this whole hostel experience in Gorham has been fascinating to me. Farther south on the trail, I heard a lot of advice to stay at the other hostel in town. Through chance circumstance, I ended up stopping by here with Tony last week and they offered a ride when I hiked to the road crossing, so I decided to take them up on it. I knew I would end up spending 2 nights, so I figured if the first was bad, I could always go to the other hostel next time. But once here, I met so many people who'd had bad experiences over there that it seemed like I'd made a better choice. I guess if I really wanted to make a fair judgment, I should have stayed a night in each place, but for now I'm very happy to be here.
