September 29, Mountain View Pond - mile 2102.2

View from White Cap Mtn Sunset on Mountain View Pond

What a spectacular day! I actually saw Katahdin today, from atop White Cap Mountain, and it nearly took my breath away. We're still 65 trail miles away, but it was only about 30 as the crow flies, so it's pretty close. We could see snow on it, too, and judging by how cold it was here, I know it's going to be frigid up there!

Well, I don't know if Katahdin fever has struck me or what it is, but something lit a fire under me today. Somehow I managed to climb four mountain peaks and then all the way back down and on a few more more miles still to this pond. It's about twice as far as I was expecting to get, based on my experience so far in the Wilderness, but somehow today the miles really came easier. I haven't really any explanation for it, other than the excitement of nearing the end, seeing Tony, etc. I surely hope the energy burst carries over into tomorrow, as I have an incredibly ambitious goal of 20 miles to reach a wilderness camp where I have a mail drop waiting. All is not lost if I don't get there tomorrow, but I would certainly like to. So we'll see.
