October 1, Crescent Pond - mile 2134
![]()
I heard the loons calling last night as I made my usual trips to the privy, and this morning we saw a large flock of them on the water as we sped past to our drop-off point. It was wonderful to see them so close.
At any rate, I enjoyed the beauty and comfort of the White House Landing, but my pocketbook sure took a hit! I did not realize until I got there that packages received would cost me $5 each (I got three), nor did I know there would not be a phone. I begged to make a 2-minute call to Tony on their cell phone, as I needed to make sure he knew when I would be at Katahdin Stream Campground to meet me. Eventually, they agreed to let me call, using my own calling card, of course, but also charging $2 per minute. By the time I had eaten 2 meals, had a shower and bed, gotten my mail and made a call, I had a $50 tab! Ouch! Good thing the trip's almost over.
The hiking today felt so tedious and tiring, even though the terrain was very, very mild. It seems my long push yesterday absolutely wore me out, so I decided to call it a day after 12 miles, when I reached this pond. It's a gorgeous spot and I'm looking forward to a good night's sleep!
