May 24, Trent's Grocery - mile 594.1

Tonight we're camped next to a cow pasture behind a tiny service station/grocery store that sells more bait than anything else, I'm quite sure. This is quite a different Virginia than where I live! And I'm certainly enjoying it. Trent's Grocery is only half a mile down a small road from where the trail crosses, & Max & I have been hungry for days, so we decided to walk down here to get some good, greasy food. We had heard rumors of camping in the back, but didn't know for sure what we would do until we got here & discovered it was true. We've been enjoying burgers & fries & Little Debbie snacks all afternoon, which has been a welcome addition to my dwindling food bag, even though we're only a day & a half from Pearisburg. I had plenty of dinner food but my breakfasts & snacks were almost out & it would have been a very lean couple of days.

The sky is doing some strange things this evening & it doesn't seem to know whether it wants to storm or clear. Twice already, it has rained while the sun shone & twice the entire sky has filled with black clouds & then completely cleared a few minutes later. I'm beginning to realize how pointless it is to listen to the weather forecast. In the mountains nothing is ever the same for two minutes anyway!
