June 16, Humpback Mountain - mile 830
![]()
What a day! I am so exhausted, I can hardly keep my eyes open to write about it. First, the good news: I conquered Three Ridges & it wasn't nearly as hard as I expected. Then the bad news: the rain is back. It has rained sporadically the past two days & this morning, but the thunderstorms really moved in with a fury around 2PM today. Three times already the sky has opened & dumped a sea of water on us, not to mention a thunder & lightning show that could win awards. I had been trudging along &-slipping & sliding my way over rock for just over 10 hours today when I spotted this camp site here on the ridge. I managed to get my tent set up under the fly so it's not quite as wet inside as it is outside & I have reasonably dry clothes on now, so I'm feeling much better than I did. I was starting to feel a little desperate, to be honest. The next shelter is still another 4.5 miles away & necessitates climbing another mountain with a very rocky trail to get there, plus my leg has really started hurting again today & I was worried about re-injuring it. Thankfully, just as I climbed this first ridge, I saw these flat spots over here. In clear weather, the sunset would be magnificent from where I'm sitting, but right now I can see about 25 feet into the fog.
I believe the only other news for the day is that I got charged by another grouse. I think it's becoming a trend.
