April 15, Wesser Bald Shelter - mile 128
I hiked in a thunderstorm today! It was an awesome experience, listening to the thunder crack over my head and watching the lightning across the sky. A couple of times I stopped to look at the horizon, where the sun was breaking through the clouds and lighting up small patches of trees on the mountains. It was such an amazing sight.
It was an easy 11 miles today, made even nicer by the fact that it stopped raining when I got here. All of my clothes are out hanging on the clothesline, as is my tent, my knee wrap, my boots, insoles - the whole works is trying to dry. We've heard from the weekenders that it's cooling off in the next few days - maybe even snow. In some ways, it would be better than rain but I think I would freeze to death at night. My bag is rated 20 degrees, but I think that's a little optimistic. Plus, I sleep colder than most people, I think. But we'll wait and see what happens - and deal with it when it does.
Tomorrow I am headed into NOC - a whitewater rafting center on the trail, though not really a town. It has a bunkhouse where we can get a soft bed for the night, plus laundry & showers and restaurants! Yippie! What luxuries.
