July 7, Hotel Doyle, Duncannon, PA - mile 1127.5
I have a room tonight at the swankiest dive in town, the Hotel Doyle, built at the turn of the century by Anheuser-Busch. It's clear this place was gorgeous in it hey days, but it's falling apart at the seam now. My single room cost me $15.90, but there's a nice hand-written note tacked to the wall assuring patrons that the linens are washed daily. The cleaning lady told us earlier that the previous owner did not ever change the sheets. so I'm glad to hear we've got new owners. But the outstanding feature of my room is this bed! The mattress almost sinks clear to the floor when I sit on it , so essentially I'll be sleeping on a "V" shape, with my butt on the floor & my head & feet up. I think I'll pretend it's a hammock! I really dig my window, too. It has a dozen or more cracks in the glass, but they've been sealed with duct tape & window caulking, & some hikers mail drop box is propping the window open. so that I can get some air. And flies, I might add.
Ahhhh, and the atmosphere! There's a couple who live in the room at the end of the hall, who have spent the past hour screaming & throwing things & then making up and then starting the cycle all over again. I expect the bar downstairs may also get a a bit noisy, tonight, being that it's Saturday, but since I'm on the fourth floor, I hope not to hear it too well. I love this place - it has real character!
Unfortunately , Tony isn't able to join me this weekend since he's got too many commitments at home, but perhaps late next week when I hit the next town. At first I felt really depressed but I've gotten over it. I knew the chances of him being able to make the trip on such short notice were small, so I shouldn't be too disappointed. I'm also back to hiking solo,. since Doreen's sister came today to pick her up. It was really nice of have the company for a week & I hope I'm not too lonely when I get back on the trail! But I expect I'll have a bit of a crowd the next couple days, as there are a lot of hikers in town who will be heading out tomorrow.
