James Moore Fieldhouse is Southern’s primary indoor athletic complex. The main arena, with a permanent seating capacity of 2,800, houses the main basketball court (renovated in 1995), as well as a six-lane, 220 - yard, artificially-surfaced track (renovated in Summer, 1997). The fieldhouse is utilized for all major indoor events and can accommodate multiple practice sessions simultaneously. Drop curtains and netting allow the main arena to accommodate a complete baseball or softball infield for practice or camps, as well as traditional indoor programs.
Moore Fieldhouse also has weight-training facilities, locker rooms, equipment room and full athletic training room. The Hutchinson Natatorium (eight lane swimming pool with both one and three-meter diving boards) is also housed in the Moore Fieldhouse.
Dedicated in 1988, Jess Dow field is a multi-million dollar stadium facility which can accommodate football, soccer, field hockey and track and field. The artificially surfaced playing field is surrounded by an eight-lane, state-of -the-art 400 - meter track. Directly adjacent to Moore Fieldhouse, Jess Dow Field is lighted and has a seating capacity of 6,000.
Pelz Gymnasium is the oldest of the Southern athletic facilities and is utilized for women’s gymnastics, women’s swimming,and volleyball, as well as physical education classes and intramurals/recreation. The facility has a recently renovated six-lane pool and an independent, auxiliary gymnasium specifically for women’s gymnastics practice.
Located directly behind Pelz Gym is a fenced - in softball field and separate soccer practice field, as well as the brand-new SCSU Baseball stadium.
All of the Southern facilities have played host to collegiate and scholastic championship events. Jess Dow Field has been the site of NCAA soccer playoffs, Connecticut high school football championships, and annually hosts the New Haven County Special Olympic Games. Moore Fieldhouse has been the site of various regional basketball, gymnastics, swimming and track and field championships for collegians and high school athletes.
