A glimpse of ASEAN culture (http://www.asean-infoculture.org)>

Are you curious what makes ASEAN tick? You can get a glimpse of the "unity in diversity" that runs through the gamut of cultural and media practices in this nine-nation Southeast Asian grouping at website http://www.asean-infoculture.org.

The ASEAN regional website for culture and information is a project of the ASEAN Committee on Culture and Information (ASEAN-COCI). It expands on the current AseanWeb (http://www.aseansec.org) which mainly features official information about the activities of ASEAN.

By incorporating backgrounders and profile information about ASEAN and its member countries, the expanded website affords more indepth understanding about Southeast Asia and its people. Hopefully, stronger regional unity at the grassroots level will be fostered. At the same time, outsiders will begin to appreciate the region beyond the grim economic statistics of the so-called "Asian flu."

The regional culture and information website has a system of hyperlinks to counterpart national websites as well as to the AseanWeb itself. These links make for easy surfing between and among the regional and national websites.

The structure and minimum features of the expanded websites were agreed upon by internet experts from ASEAN member countries who met in Manila in October 1997 and in Jakarta in February 1998. The Philippines coordinated the project for ASEAN-COCI.

The expanded website was officially launched last 14 July 1998 during the fifth meeting of the ASEAN Ministers Responsible for Information (AMRI) held in Bangkok, Thailand. (vmg)
