Runes

The word "rune" is linked with the Old Norse words for "mystery" or "secrets", and with an old German word for "whisper", so runes have always had an esoteric element.

The alphabets are known as Futharks from the first six runes. The Elder Futhark has 24 runes, but other runic alphabets vary in number. They were commonly found in parts of Northern Europe, Scandinavia, and the British Isles. Each rune might have a magical value attributed to it. They could be used in poetry, divination, as charms, or in writing. The knowledge of the use of runes was said to originate with Odin who speared himself to the Yggdrasil for nine nights, and in return was granted the power and wisdom of the runes.

In the manga, a symbol or rune is engraved on the stones of the bracelets carried by the Lotis Masters. Each rune represents a Lotis symbol.

Anyone wanting to learn the use of runes must also become familiar with Norse mythology: they are inseparable. Furthermore, it's been believed that runes have magic powers that can tell the future.

Mara

The demons that enter the Inner Heart, which the Lotis Masters fight against. From European superstition a Mara creates bad dreams or is a demon thereof; sometimes the Nightmare. Similar and sometimes synonymous with the Latin Incubus. From Buddhist tradition, the commander of the demon army and a deity of death and temptation.

Maram

Words of darkness or Words of Maram. There are 24 words total (notice this is the same number as the runes of the Elder Futhark (it may or may not be coincidental at all).
