3 How it works 3.3 High quality staff In accordance to my appeal above that the right persons need to be picked for a job and that their knowledge and skills must be maintained, it is clear that only qualified staff workers are useful for the perfect education system. The areas where staff is needed are childcare, lecturing, marking, counselling, journalism (for forum and discussion purposes; see chapter ii, section 7.2) and computing (for network purposes; the importance of a network is described below in chapter ii, section 5.3), all of which should be highly competent in what they are doing. 3.3.1 Caretakers Child caretakers must have a high degree in psychology in order to be able to trace shortcomings from the parents' side and to detect circumstances that can lead to a bad character. Likewise, they must know how to make children see that they need to follow good examples and thus make an effort to do what the caretaker asks them to do (important for habits like sitting with your back straight and so on). Yet at the same time they need to be able to get children and youngsters to use their own heads and think individually in order to get a healthy rate of criticism from the public (instead of a herd of sheep, blindly following a leader or unreasonable social rules). 3.3.2 Lecturers There is no single set of criteria that makes a 'good' lecturer since every student seems to have his or her own preferences and personal sympathy seems to play a big role. Yet a few criteria are a must for every lecturer. He must be highly proficient in the subject he is teaching. Even though a general level of proficiency might be sufficient for some introduction modules, it is of importance to be able to answer a student's advanced questions as one never knows where a new interest and talent can be developed. A higher level of proficiency also lowers the risk of mistakes being made on a basic level. A teacher must be trustworthy as well and this is best achieved by being a real professional. Furthermore a high level of proficiency is required for those academics who will evaluate test results and mark submissions of homework. 3.3.3 Counsellors There should be a high amount of personnel to help a student choose the right path in his studies; counsellors will be required to have a high degree in psychology, social sciences (to keep track of the current market developments) and a particular field of studies to specialize in (to explicate the full range of possibilities to students). A good net of contacts is also desirable, not only as an 'address book' but also on a personal level to get an idea how helpful particular contacts can be. 3.3.4 Journalists and network A high trust is put into a group of journalists and informaticians (who keep the network running). Those will maintain the core of the perfect system by making it work (that is building data bases, coordinating schedules etc) and keeping it up to date (by providing forums for public opinion and tracking changes in society that can make changes in the system necessary (in order to fulfill all criteria, the system must be flexible and constantly kept up to date). 3.1 Focus on the individual 3.2 Give contents to grades and certificates 3.4 Go global! 3.5 What about financial resources? |
