Grocery Stores
There are three main grocery stores within a reasonable distance
to the school: Spiceland Mall's Real Value, Food Fair,
and Food Land. Real Value is on the main bus route between
True Blue and Grand Anse campuses. Food Fair is not far from Real
Value (within walking distance) or you can take the Mont Tout school
bus from school to the door. Downtown also has a Food Fair and a
Food Land, as well as the downtown produce market. All downtown
areas can be reached by reggae bus. Reggae bus stops are all over
the island. The easiest one for most people to get to is near the
Round Houses in Grand Anse. Real Value is usually the most expensive
grocery store, though it usually has the largest selection. They
also carry American-imported meats and poultry, and have a good
deli department- which is cheaper than packaged meats. Food Fair
and Food Land are usually less expensive, but have fewer selections.
Food Fair has a great selection of cheeses- even imported European
cheeses- sometimes for cheaper than in the states. All stores have
cheap spices as well. Just make sure no matter where you shop, you
check expiration dates.
Other Stores
Hubbard's is a well-known hardware store that also carries
miscellaneous things such as pet food, dishes, pots and pans, plants,
etc. It is located next to the Food Fair nearest to the school.
There is also an Ace Hardware downtown, on the caranage.
Courts is another popular, though sopmewhat expensive store.
It carries some hardware, electronics, and carpet to name a few
things.
Places to Eat
There are a lot of nice restaurants on the island. If you want
to learn about them, click
here for a link to a restaurant guide. But if you're a starving
student, don't even tempt yourself. One day when you come back to
Grenada for vacation, you can go to all of them. Places that students
go can sometimes be a little more shady, but the food is good and
the prices are nothing to complain about.
Nick's, located under the Round Houses in the Grand Marquis
square in Grand Anse has great sandwiches, gyros, donuts, drinks
and popsicles for a great price. La Boulangerie is a little
French / Italian cafe also located under the Round Houses. They
have great Italian pizzas starting at 22EC. They also serve quiches,
calzones, and other Italian food. Order to go or eat in the cafe.
Le Chateau is also in the Round House complex, they
have decent sandwiches, good fries and excellent fish fingers!!
Reasonably priced, very friendly and time efficient service! The
Ladies, of course, is popular with the students. They are located
on Grand Anse campus, next to the dorms. The price is unbeatable,
the portions are humongous, and it tastes pretty good. All the food
is local, and whether you like it or not, consider going a cultural
experience. If you're in the mood for burgers, a great hang-out
is Rick's- Walk in, Dance Out. The burgers and pizzas are
good and the prices are great. Rick's is located next to Food Fair
and Hubbard's. Jade Garden, which is located right next to
the Texaco on the Fish n Chicks (yes, not Chips) roundabout costs about $10 EC per meal
and serves pretty decent chinese food. Also for chinese food, Choo Light
in Lance aux Epines right on the main road is reasonably priced
and pretty good- especially their wontons and egg rolls. One other
place for more of a dining experience with out the HUGE bill is
De Soleil in the Alamada Hotel. It's set around a pool area
with nice paintings. Expect to spend about $100 EC for two appetizers,
two entrees (pasta and good fajitas), a soda and a glass of wine.
It has really good food at decent prices!!! If you feel nostalgic for something from home, and want something cheap, drop by the NEW Subway- yes, the same one Jared advertises- located in the Excel Plaza, near the movie theater. And don't forget the KFC next to Spiceland Mall.
