CONSENT
At the Shadow of Olympus, as in almost every other world on the Internet, there is an unspoken law that states that all that is done in character (IC) leads to IC consequences. If your character is blatantly rude to the King, you must expect repercussions. If you character is the epitome of brown-nosers, you may find yourself in the King's favor. This seems to make sense, no? The difficulties arise when character death is involved. As a player on the Shadow of Olympus, you can expect to not be killed frivolously and without point if you do not wish it. This does not make you exempt from violence, however. The +warn command (see +help warn) is to be used by any character wishing to do unwarranted violence of any sort. This will allow those who do not wish to be affected to leave the scene or protect themself before it becomes impossible to do so. However, this will not get you out of a situation where the violence is a result of your own actions. If you kill everyone in the local guardhouse, when you are caught, you can expect to die without your agreement since you initiated the encounter. While this is a large-scale example, this also applies to smaller person-to-person conflict. If you are in doubt whether your revenge is warranted or not, use the +warn command. There is no rule which says you *must* die as a result of your actions. If all parties agree, any death can be mitigated to injury or other result. Remember, we are trying to tell a story. Sometimes the best villians never die, just get foiled time and again. We at the Shadow of Olympus do not encourage character death, we understand how much time and effort each person puts into their character. Character death is a fact of IC life, though, so we hope these simple rules will help make sure that any death is a meaningful and significant result of prior storyline.

DISCLAIMER
This is a game based in Greek Mythology. Much like the board game 'Life' is based on, well, Life. The difference between the -real- Greek Mythology and Shadows of Olympus, much like the difference between 'Life' and Life, is that Greek Mythology didn't bend itself to conform to a certain time period, stat system, rule system, or chargen system. In other words, Shadow of Olympus is not ENTIRELY based on Greek Mythology. Because we are a -game-, we've taken certain liberties with what one might find in historical Greek Mythology. We've bent the age limits of semi-immortals and mortals, we've calmed most of the gods down, we've granted women a bigger place in society. Why? We feel that Shadows of Olympus benefits from a few modern twists. We also feel that the gaming community enjoys certain winding paths that lead away from historical accuracy. And we wanted to include many RP'ers without making them uncomfortable, or feel that the game is too foreign to their modern sensibilities. With all that being said, I'd like to thank those of you who are scholars of Greek Mythology and history (and believe me, there's a lot of you). I am very impressed with the knowledge of the general character and staff base. However, I do wish to let all the enthusiasts know that though we tried to keep the game as close to myth and legends as possible, we took very many liberties in different places. Please do not be offended by our take on Mythology. It is not intended to be a religiously, historically, or mythologically accurate game. We've tried to make a game that's fun to play and interesting for all involved. We're glad you've come to play here and hope that you'll stay for a long, long time!
