My Herron family originates in County Durham, England, in the valley of the upper Wear, a long narrow valley with heather covered hills. It is the valley of the Wear river which flows through Durham City and out to sea at Sunderland.


George HERRON bapt. Stanhope 1778, son of Thomas Herron and (?) married Esther HOLMES daughter of Richard HOLMES of St. Johns Chapel at Wolsingham in 1807. They had the following children at Satley: Elizabeth b.1810 Jane b.1813 *George b.1815 Robert b.1822 (married Ann) Mary b.1825 (married George TELFORD) Esther b.1826 (married John BROWN)


George HERRON (b.1815) became a farmer and in 1840 married Hannah DAWSON, daughter of Oliver DAWSON, a farmer, of Heigh. They had the following children at Satley: Jane b.1841 George b.1843 Esther b.1846 *Robert b.1848 John b.1851 Oliver b.1854



The HERRON family emigrated to the USA sometime in the 1860's and settled in northeastern Pennsylvania in Marcy Twp. Luzerne Co. in an area which later became Duryea. There Robert married Mary Ellen THOMPSON, the daughter of David and Martha CLARK(E) THOMPSON who had emigrated from Tow Law, County Durham in 1863. Mary Ellen was born in 1853. Robert and Mary Ellen had the following children: *Margaret b.1875 Isabelle (married John FAIRCLOUGH) Sarah (married William BROWN) Robert Ralph Mary(Mame) b.1881 (married Norris WINGARD) Lena (married Ernest Melvin BEDFORD) David Lian b.1877 Charlotte Elmira b.1894 William c.1892



Margaret HERRON married David Aaron COCHRAN around 1895. David was born in Bernice, PA in Sullivan Co. in 1873 to William and Nancy SHEILDS(?) COCHRAN. William was born in Scotland. Margaret and David had the following children: Archie b.1895 Robert *Mary Naomi (Marian) b.1906
