Easy ACPI Removal for Win9X and ME
(Some systems will not work with certain hardware if ACPI is enabled,NICS are a common problem)

Thanks to Peter Filias for testing on ME
With ACPI removed you can go back assign IRQs manually in the Device Manager if required.

Backup

Win98:makes a registry backup each day you boot up.These can be accessed from an F8 bootup/command prompt only and typing scanreg/restore.To make sure you can also use the free WRP to make another better one before making any changes to the system.
WinME/XP:Make a new restore point.
Tip:Make a folder on your drive called Drivers. Make sub folders in it for you main devices that you know need updated or maker specific drivers.Expand the driver's packages into them. You can now point PnP to these to install your drivers much faster than swapping Cdroms.I do this anyway as I never re-format just to Clean re-install windows :)
Let's do it
1:Device Manager/System Devices(Tip:Windows Key+Pause key)
2:Double click on the,"Advanced and Configuration Power Interface{ACPI)BIOS"
3:Driver Tab and choose to update or re-install driver.
4:Next\ and choose to display all drivers(not search).
5:Next\Show all hardware.
6:In the left hand pane the,"Standard System Devices" should be highlighted.
7:Move mouse cursor to the right hand pane and scroll down the PnP BIOS{Fail safe)and highlight
8:Next\and say yes to next option(Ignore warning) and follow through.

Once out of the Device Manager re-boot and windows will re-detect all the hardware.

If you have any problems with the described method and lose any Device Manager settings you can just use a win98 boot disk(or copy your Win98 folder off the Cd to the hard drive) and re-run the window's setup.exe over itself but if you do,un-install any updated Internet Explorer/Outlook Express you have added before you do using the Control Panel/Add Remove Programs section. You won't lose anything by doing this and it can repair faulty systems. In WinME you have the setup.exe in your Options folder already.

If any program or device doesn't work just remove the program and re-install it and update your other device drivers and re-install your mother board specific drivers pack and re-use to F8 bootup/Safemode to check for duplicate/misplaced drivers as per,Drivers

Note:Removing ACPI will mean that the CPU will not Drop it's temperature and when idle but this feature has been removed from some mother board hardware anyway as it can cause problems and is really only useful for,"Notebook" computers. This is not really a problem but if you want the option back you can use the freeware, ATM(another task manager)
