The DALnet

How are DALnet servers connected ?
The different DALnet servers are linked to other DALnet servers via the Internet connections.
In this way the DALnet is useing the existing connections on the internet , and is also
influenced by it when there is heavy traffic or major breakdowns in the Internet itself.
The servers are organized into 2 main groups, the Leaf servers and the hub-servers.
Each Leaf server (pc/server) name in the map example below) connects to only one hub-server.
(The hub-servers are the boxlike objects in the map below). Every hub-server connects to one or more
other hub-servers and can have many Leaf servers attached to it-self. This I have tried to show
with the IRC-map.

Map and explanations on diff servers
The backbone of the DALnet is a string of hub-servers (boxlike) to which the Leaf servers (pc/server) are linked. An example of routing between servers on DALnet (98-may-12)

Explanation of lag
When there is much data traffic in an area, lag might show up. Lag appears like people are slow to answer.
Where the lag is can affect the people in different ways. Some will maybe not be affected, useally those
that are on servers "close" to each other. Others might seem to be talking about things that has allready
been talked about minutes ago. This could be a sign of lag. To test if a person is lagging to you , you can
try the /ping nick where the nick is the name of the person that you think is lagging. In your status window
there will come a reply like : [nick's] ping reply: 30 sec. This will show you that if you type something
, it will show up delayed at where nick is and his/her answer will be delayed the same amount the other way.
Usually lag is a temporary thing and dissapears after a while... It can however get worse and cause a net split.

What is a net split
When a Server on DALnet can't uphold the link to another Server, it is called a net-split. This may affect many people
if it happens between the hub-servers or it might affect only the people on one local server if it is a leaf-
server that splits from a hub. This is sometimes also done intentionally by the people that runs the DALnet to fix problems.
To the people in a channel it will look like many people quit at the same time and then later comes back again.

Changing servers
Sometimes when there are splits or a lot of lag, it can help to change to another server
