DALnet Channel #SiAM's Help about Services page

The channel for people who are interested in Thailand and chatting with Thai people

The Dalnet services:

Which services are there?

There are 3 main Services.

These are:
NickServ that handles names of people,
ChanServ that keeps an eye on the channels/rooms,
and MemoServ which is basically a mini mail system.

There are others, but they are only interesting to special users, so they wont be mentioned here.
The way you can communicate with the services are through the new commands:
/NickServ <'command'>, /Chanserv <'command'> and /MemoServ <'command'>.
An example is:
   /Nickserv INFO bitdown
This command would ask NickServ to show the informations that it has on the user bitdown.
The answers will show in your Status window.
If there is no user named bitdown, it will tell you that the nick bitdown is not registered.
This can be used when you look for a nickname that you would like to use, so you can see if the name is allready taken.

Nickserv:
The NickServ service handles the things about peoples names on DALnet.
If you find a nice nick you can register it with NickServ , if it is not registered allready.
A registering of a nick is done online and
makes it possible to use the same nick next time you connect to IRC on DALnet. (there is a 20-22 day timeout)
When you want to register a nick you send a message to Nickserv about it. You will need a password to register.

How to register a nick:
1) You choose a name you want to use.
To be sure it is avaible you can use the above mentioned
/Nickserv INFO nickname to see if the name is taken allready.
2) You change to the name with /nick nickname if you cant do this, then another user is using that name
and you cant register it at this time.
3) You find a password. Almost any word will be useable just remember to write it down or memorise it.
The password is like a key to the nickname, dont give it to others or they will be able to keep it.
In this example I will use applepie as password:
   /Nickserv REGISTER applepie
This should register the nickname that you have when you type the command, with the password applepie.
If you later need to identify that it is your nickname you need to remember your password.
 /Nickserv IDENTIFY applepie
Is how you prove to nickserv that it is your nickname.
Remember: Do not give your password to others.

Chanserv:
When people make a new channel, they can also register it.
Chanserv will store all the information about the channel and help keeping the channel the way founder make it.
If a channel is not registered , the channel will be forgotten when it is empty.
How to register a channel:
First you make the channel with:
  /join channelname
This will open the channel/room to you. If the room is empty and free you will become a @ on your name
and the name of the channel wil stand alone at the top of the channel/room window.
If a message of: Channel is operated by chanserv. appears then the room is already taken
and you need to find another name for your room.
Now the registering can take place by typing:
 /Chanserv REGISTER Channelname password description
The Channelname is what your channel is going to be called.
The password is a word or numbers or mixed. DON'T give your password out to others.
And description is just a short sentence to describe your channel.

Much more info on Chanserv commands can be found at the DALnet website.

Memoserv:
A way to leave short messages to friends if they are offline. (The nick of reciever should be registered)
How to send a memo:
/Memoserv SEND nickname text text text.
This will send the 'text text text' to memoserv that will keep it for the user nickname.
When nickname comes online Memoserv will inform nickname that there is 1 or more memos waiting.
To read a message you need to know it's number.
/Memoserv LIST will make a list of the memos you have.
/Memoserv READ number is used to read the memos.

For online help, you can write one of the following commands in your status window.

/nickserv help
/chanserv help
/memoserv help
