HISTORY OF SIENA COLLEGE, QUEZON CITY

 

Cruising along Del Monte Avenue, Quezon City one would see an impressive, durable, and “unpainted look” architectural building which reflects the character of Siena College, Q.C. its interior is airy with spacious corridors and well-ventilated classrooms. The school is beautiful, and has very functional facilities. It boasts of an environment in which the school community works to achieve its objectives with ease efficiency. It provides the best possible learning atmosphere for its clientele.

 

Siena College, QC is a private, non-stock, non-profit institution. It was established by the Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine’s of Siena fulfilling its mission to “participate in the evangelization of the church by proclaiming Jesus Christ and building the Kingdom of God (Congregational Mission Statement), and responding to the growing community of san Francisco Del Monte area. It is one of the schools zealously founded by the Congregation throughout the country and abroad. Through the unfaltering courage and foresight of Reverend Mother Natividad Pilapil, OP, the in the year 1958. Therewith, it opened its doors to grade school, high school and college students totaling 500 during the school 1959-60.

 

Henceforth, Siena College, QC has committed itself to the task of continuing with consistent efforts, the work of development and improvement for quality Christian education that will bring fruition its vision, mission and goals. Guided by the ideals of St. Dominic, St. Catherine of Siena, and Mother Francisca Del Espiritu Santo, the school will always be vigilant in pursuing the goals of a truly Christian, Dominican and Filipino education.

 

Vision and mission. Through its programs and institutional activities, Siena College, QC as a Catholic school, participates in church’s salvific mission through gospel-centered education. As a Dominican school, it shares in St. Dominic’s passion for commitment to the service of truth. As a Filipino school, it believes in the appreciation and promotion of the Filipino culture and values. Consequently, Siena College, QC aspires to facilitate the formation of a graduate who is a maturing Christian, a defender of truth, a true Filipino and responsive professional.

 

Work for educational excellence. Siena College, QC is dedicated and committed to “ form persons firmly rooted in the Catholic faith, teachings, and values; consistently responsive to the needs of the Filipino family, country and environment, through a Gospel-centered education which integrates faith and life (SCQC mission statement). It offers basic education and wide range of formal and informal programs in various fields.

 

In 1972, Siena College, QC adopted for the tertiary level, a ladder-type curriculum composed of terminal courses where student is made to graduate to a specific job at the end of each year. In this program, even if a student drop outs of school after a terminal year or before he salient feature of the ladder-type curriculum is the total formation of the student and the acquisition of skills through the practicum program. This type of curriculum addresses the problem of school dropouts and implements the global thrust of education for all.

 

The ladder-type curriculum is envisioned in response to the needs of our people and society in general. It is a work-oriented program designed to develop and immediately utilize whatever talent and abilities the student has so that she can contribute productively to a developing country.

 

Courses offered are Bachelor in Secondary Education (Major in Religious Education), Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with field  specialization in Management, Banking and Finance, Managerial Accounting), Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management, Bachelor of Science in Tourism, Bachelor of Arts (Major in Mass Communications). The non-degree programs include certificates in one clerical skill, junior

 

 

Religious education graduates of Siena College, QC live and work among the aetas and serve the community.

 

Siena College, QC brings to life the ideals of basic ecclesiastical community (B.E.C) by forming among students, faculty and personnel, small Christian communities that will live the Christian apostolic life centered on Christ’s way of living, loving and serving.

 

Let Siena shine in the radiance of god’s glory. Let Siena shine in the minds and hearts of those she forms and educates. Let her gleaming countenance reach the darkness of ignorance and fear and share the light of god’s good news to pave the way to wisdom and love. As a truly Dominican school, Siena College shall raise the light of its passion for truth and compassion for humanity.

  

Ever responsive to the needs of the Church and of our country, and its commitment to uplift individuals to grow in Christian faith, Siena College, QC with the inspiration of the Holly Spirit, arduously prepared a Graduate Studies Program in Religious Education. On 24 July 1998, the Commission on Higher Education finally granted the school to operate the Master of Arts in Religious Education and in Pastoral Ministry.

 

Commitment to quality education. The drive for improvement and development and full awareness of its responsibility to be an agent of change, Siena College, QC adopted policies, measures and procedures to upgrade the quality of its services. To insure improvement, the school underwent self-surveys conducted by the Council on Education of the Congregation. Likewise, it also produced the services of the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities. The grade school and the high school departments as well as the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration program of the college department as well as the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration program of the college department of the institution underwent successful formal surveys by the PAASCU. The PAASCU preliminary surveys started during the school year 1978-79.

 

The latest PAASCU revisit for the three departments was conducted during the school year 1994-95. The grade school and high school department and college’s Bachelor of Science in Business Administration program were granted 5 years accreditation status. The next re-survey is due by the year 2000. Being a member of the PAASCU is recognition and an acknowledgement of the school’s commitment to quality education.

 

Extension services to the community. In its vision as a caring, sharing, and compassionate community of believers; constantly aspiring to serve the TRUTH- built around the person of Jesus Christ and His gospel, Siena College, QC’s students, school staff, alumni and parents do its witnessing in complete harmony with their Faith; to look at their neighbors with the eyes of Christ; and to be one with them in thought, word and deed. Their goal is to help promote a meaningful transformation among the disadvantage and the marginalized for them to attain a firmer grasp of Catholic Christian education, health and their more basic physiological needs- to help rescue them from the precarious fingers of human dignity and survival and to reach out in the life-giving solidarity of our Faith.

 

Among the community extension service programs they undertake are health care, social relations, Alay Dunong, Catechetical Instruction, Mother Francisca Catechetical and Missionary Formation Institute, Aeta Rehabilitation and Integrated Development Program, and the Mother Francisca Skills Training Program.

 

The last outreach program of Siena College, QC is the Rehabilitation and Development Program to the displaced Aetas (by Mt. Pinatubo eruption) presently settling in Pasbul, Porac Pampanga. The objectives of the program are to bring Christ to them; provide the shelter, teach them the necessary skills to start a new life and become self-sufficient; to assure them health services; and to uplift their status and incorporate them into society. Since 1992, the Siena College, QC community with the assistance of the Dominican Family has adopted an Aeta Community composed of three tribes in the area. Several services have been delivered to them as means of development particularly through education. In 1995 a mission school, an extension of Siena College, QC was built for the literacy program for the children and adults.
