The Peony Bed |
 |
|
This 3 tiered bed of peonies at the Southwest side of the back yard was just planted in fall of 1998. A few of the tree peonies have started to make a show. It will truly be a showcase in another year or two.
The edge of the Herb bed (left) is surrounded by French and Spanish lavender . The Pink Alpine Tulips and crocuses have already bloomed. The bed next to it has peonies, Pink Oriental Poppy, Siberian Irises and White Foxglove. Within a month will come tall phlox, Blue Butterfly Scabiosa, and Chicago Robe Day Lilly. And at the far right is the peony bed, a three-tiered cottage structure which took two summers of my husband's energy!
This is the top row of the cottage stone peony bed,devoted to Day Lilies and Siberian Irises, back-dropped on each side by blue Clematis.
Day Lilies featured here are "Pandora's Box", "Bali Hai" and "Gentle Shepard." Others in mauve and purple shades grow at the far end. Siberian Iris and Victorian Sage are mixed in between.
In the fall, vibrant Blue Aster will edge this entire tier.

"The garden should be adorned with roses and lilies, the turnsole, violets, and mandrake;
there you should have parsley, cost, fennel, southern-wood, coriander, sage, savory,
hyssop, mint, rue, dittany, smallage, pellitory, lettuces, garden-cress, and peonies. There
should also be beds planted with onions, leeks, garlic, pumpkins and shallots. The
cucumber growing in its lap, the drowsy poppy, the daffodil and brank-ursine ennoble
a garden. Nor are there wanting, if occasion further thee, pottage-herbs: beets,
herb-mercury, orache, sorrel and mallows, anise, mustard, white pepper and
wormwood do good service to the gardener."
